Is wider coverage of Match ups important?

A lot of people specifically pick up their secondary character to cover some of their bad match ups, as of now i still dont really know exactly which match ups are terrible for me, and which ones are great since the game is so new there is obviously a lot to learn still. My main is shulk, my secondary that im working on is sonic, and my "pocket" character, or i guess you could say i mostly use him to mix things up, but still feel confident in him is charizard.

My only concern is that bad match ups for shulk will also be a bad match up for charizard and sonic, so my counter picks wont be that good. Is this something i should worry about? or just play the characters i like and feel i can be good with, and pick which one im feeling the most at the time. I feel like all 3 of my characters may have some trouble against campy characters, or some of the faster usually high tier characters with good juggling. That may just be my own lack of skill though.

Going based off the title of the thread, yeah it is important to have a wider coverage of match ups. Especially for me because Little Mac isn't the best character in the world, and he gets bodied by plenty of the "high to mid tier" characters, I usually go to Sonic as my secondary against those match ups I have a hard time with.

Sometimes with Mac, it feels like trying to learn old Cammy in Super turbo. In order to be good with her, you gotta literally lean every other character just so you can have some sort of counter, especially ones where she has match ups of 10 - 90 or 20 -80... its like trying to learn the game, instead of the character :p

Also, if you want to find out what match ups Charizard, Sonic and Shulk are good against, I recommend going to the character forums and asking around in their social threads and in their match up threads.... you'll find there will be a lot of good players that use them, so take their advice and run with it :p
