Is there still directional up-b for Mario?

Can Mario still change the direction of his up-b during the inital startup frames of the animation or can you not control his startup frames during the up-b anymore; I used to love doing a perfect vertical up-b after sacrificing all my vertical momentum for my horizontal recovery.

his up b goes straighter toward the ledge...the only thing i found i could control was the falling animation after the move itself...
