Is there serious money in Competitive Smash?

I know there's games with money in them (i.e Counter-Strike), but I've never heard of anybody winning any substantial money from a Melee/Brawl/64 tournament before.

Yes, there is "serious money" in Smash. Personally, I've never once heard of a Smash tournament that didn't give out money.

Not in the way you're thinking. The largest pot for smash ever I believe was this tournament:

The FGC is still somewhat new especially Smash. If it keeps growing maybe in a decade or two we will start to see really big prizes.
