The update said that there would be co-op story mode,
but I don't think they said anything about it being online.
Does anybody know?

I'm sure they would've mentioned it if there was..
Let's just hope there is. Maybe they'll surprise us.

I doubt it. What would happen if you unlocked something with the help of someone on a different console? Do you both get the new character/stage/whatever? Or just the main player? I dunno, just doesn't seem likely to me.

It'd be cool but I don't think I would want to play smash with what would seemingly be a CPU ally, since you can't really communicate with your friend. Unless you're on the phone or using some IM app or something.

In that case the "Player One" should get to unlock stuff, since Player 2 is "like another option" (?). It'd be cool because we could help our newb friends beat adventure mode in higher difficulties (it might be a preequisite to unlock something).
But yeah, the lack of communication would make things boring.

Given that Strikers already has that function in the form of a 2v2 player game, I would be surprised if Brawl lacked at least that.

I think it could work where you only play with friends, and your progress with friends online is saved so that you can go back to it.

I'm assuming that's how Halo 3 and Gears of War work, but I wouldn't know. I've never played either of them.

It would be cool if you could choose which stage you wanted complete and your partner online would have to choose that stage as well. That way you won't be spoiling anything for anybody.

Wi-fi co-op is possible but you wouldn't be able to unlock anything in it. It would have to strictly for fun. In my opinion, it would be similar to cheating if you couldn't complete easy yet your opponent could breeze through it and you end up unlocking all the secrets without doing anything yourself. Of course, even if you didn't get rewards you would still have some idiot who gets his kicks out of commiting suicide so you lose. There really isn't a way around that.

Well i wouldn't hope too much for it. Anyways it's pretty hard to satisfy everyone, 1-P Subspace Emissary would've been alright but some people would have complained about the lack of multiplayer Story Mode. We got multiplayer, and some would complain about the lack of online co-op in Story Mode. If we got that, i guess we would hear complains about the lack of online Story Mode that finds girls compatible with you, so you can get girlfriends while playing Brawl.

So, two player Subspace Emissary is enough to thank for.
