Is the New 3DS XL worth the upgrade for Sm4sh?

Lately I've been in a situation where I'm not able to practice on my Wii U, due to it being at my brothers house for long periods of time. I was practicing on GameCube controller like the majority of everyone else. But now, in order for me to keep my skill up, my 3DS is the only thing available. I know the New 3DS XL adds the ZL and ZR buttons, and also the C-Stick. Not going to count on much for the ZL and ZR buttons, and they seem almost out of reach for fast Sm4sh play, but I'll test that later if I actually get the system. I'm still meh about the C-stick. I messed around with the Sm4sh Demo they had in GameStop on the New 3DS XL and it did made going into an aggressive Villager with FAirs and BAirs much easier. It wasn't enough play to decide if it was worth it. I know the C-Stick alone opens up so much more options. I would want to use what I practice on, so this would end up being my controller for tourneys for a while. Is the upgrade for the New 3DS XL worth it? I currently have a regular size 3DS by the way.

I think it's worth the investment. Certain games will only be compatible with the newer version. Just like most gaming systems, gotta upgrade.

If you want to play competitively, save whatever money you would spend on a 3DS XL so you can by a Wii U later. Based on personal experience, the XL is better than the regular 3DS but neither are anywhere close to the GC controller.

Gotta stay up to date for the new Pokemon games when they eventually become exclusives.

Sadly, its this or nothing. Only reason I have the chance to get the New 3DS XL is that GameStop has a deal this week where if you trade in you old 3DS you get a $100 towards the purchase of the New 3DS XL. With enough game trade ins and the little cash I have, I can get it.

I would do nothing if you are only considering it for smash. I was totally unimpressed with the n3DS cstick for smash.

One other possible cheaper solution (and a cool learning opportunity) would be to find used old 3ds and try and mod it like this video shows:

If you cant get a wiiu, then yes it totally worth it.

IMO new 3ds its only useful on this basis:
-You are a huge fan of mh4, playing 60fps its a lot nicer. the experience its worth it.
-You really like smash3ds, the c-stick makes a huge gameplay impact. Its not a wiiu but its a lot better than regular xl.
-You have never played the masterpiece of xenoblade so the new3ds version is your last chance.

Have fun!

I've always wanted to get into the Monster Hunter series, so I guess this would be a good time to get started. Same with Xenoblade. I know the graphics are Sadly worse, but It's better than nothing :)

I have a 2DS along with my Wii U and I find that I'm better on my Wii U due to the game cube controller. that being said, the only jealousy factor I get from the new 3DS xl is the fact that they can use amiibos and get all the custom moves in them.... Other than that, things like the c-stick and bigger screen and more buttons are just bells and whistles that aren't worth the price since I already have a functioning system. Maybe if I didn't already have a 2DS. But I'm a tight*** with my wallet so take what you will from this.

The C-"stick" is ****, don't even bother getting it for Smash. Get a New 3DS if you've never played Xenoblade before, because that's one of the best games I've ever played, but don't get it for Smash.

Is it true you can't change the function of the C-stick for the new 3ds for Smash?

Have a N3DS, and it's true, it can only be set to Smash. You also can't change the function of ZL and ZR which are set to shield and grab respectively.

Honestly, I think the New 3DS is worth the investment, period. Everything about it is nicer. The screen, the 3D (if you like 3D, of course), the loading speed, the feel... It's just really, really good. I thought the visuals would look horribly scaled-up, but that's really not the case. They are very crisp and appealing, even (and maybe especially in some cases) with the larger screen.

I'll say this, though: don't get it for the c-nub. It's absolute 100% garbage. It seriously makes the PSP's analog look like amazing by comparison. If you're wanting to get it for that, don't. I'm genuinely astonished that Nintendo added such a bizarre, uncomfortable, and horribly-implemented bit of kit into the system.

There could be some truth to this, but is this really a new gaming system or more like an intermediate upgrade?
Sorta like the DSi. If I couldn't use homebrew on DSi I'd be pissed about buying one.

It's an intermediate upgrade much like the Game Boy Color was to the Game Boy and the DSi was to the DS.

I'm (probably) getting one for the holidays. I'm glad I saw this thread. That's too bad about not able to reassign the C stick.

I logged onto Smashboards for the first time in a while and saw this post had been revived and moved to a diffrent sub forum.

Yes sadly.
It's an awesome system but the c stick on 3ds isn't suited for smash. I wouldn't buy it to train.
After getting the New 3DS 6 months ago, a few days after I made this thread, yes. I agree. It's a fantastic upgrade.

The nub wears away too...
