Is the DI system 100 percent melee? or is it a brawl melee hybrid?

Could someone point me to a good PM DI tutorial(Ive already seen advanced "how to play" pt 1,2, and 3)? Or maybe just answer a question?

I understand what DI is and why its good, but i havent been able to find out EXACTLY when im suppose to press the thumb stick while im getting hit/thrown to initiate the DI(and smash DI with the c stick) if anyone could clear this up id appreciate it.

This thread is somewhat out-dated, but Doraki's guide is still an awesome resource for understanding DI. For more advanced concepts, you can check out this compilation of Magus' posts.

In direct response to your question, smash DI (SDI) is done by inputting directions on either the control stick or the C-stick during hitlag, the frames where you freeze after getting hit. However, with the exception of Jiggs' FThrow in Melee (I'm not sure if it does this in PM), you cannot SDI throws. For the best results with DI, you should try holding a direction before you get hit.

you have as long as the move's hitlag lasts, which scales directly with the damage of the attack that hit you.
yes, your SDI and Trajectory DI can be in opposing directions. they are independent forces.

to answer the question of the thread title, the DI system is 100% melee.

If you want to immediately test your DI, have Ganon Side B on the ground and try to land completely behind him. If your DI sucks, you'll still be in front of him in jab or even grab range depending on who you are, if DI's at least subpar, you'll land on the ground directly behind him.
