I watched the November Nintendo Direct and it stated that you can fight other players who have spirits as well, is this online or is it just local?

Online is only in battle arenas.

No, they are saying that you CAN do it in Battle Arenas. So it is there, but it's in the mode that doesn't count towards any ranking system. but it is an online option.

If you want to test your skills you...probably shouldn't be using spirits.

I know, but adding the spirits sounds so fun, I've always been a sucker for parameters and stats
