So while it's no secret that many Melee fans don't really care for Brawl (and to some extent Smash 4), when it comes to the original game, things aren't so clear. When you do hear Melee players talk about it, the typical response is: "It's okay but I prefer Melee." And if you ask 64 players what they think about Melee they either don't care for it at all or just give a similar response: "It's okay but I prefer 64."

Both games are very technical and allow for long and creative combos, making them perfect for competitive play. They were also the two games that were developed by the original HAL Laboratory team, so they share some similarities and feel different to the games that proceeded them. I never had the game growing up and have only been able to play it via virtual console. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me and now I consider it to be the second best in the series.

But what about you guys?

This is true to me, but I don't think to most people. PM is almost identical to Melee and the mod "fixed" the issues Melee fans had with Brawl. PM is definitely second, 64 third and then a pretty large gap, then Sm4sh and Brawl.

Seriously though, 64 is amazing, play it.

PM is my second favourite but since PM is a mod and not an actual game, then 64 would be my second favourite

64 is the game I love to this day and it is definitely 2nd best in the series. But I don't really play it anymore because Melee, like a true sequel, takes everything great about 64 and took it to another level while adding more depth and polish to the gameplay, so there isn't much reason to go back. Can't say the same for the last two sequels.

To get right down to it,

1. :mariomelee:Melee: It's the best one... Good selection of characters, good music, good graphics, and most importantly it has super deep competitive play.

2. :mario2:PM: Better graphics, better selection of characters (sorry Pichu), better music, but the gameplay feels like a lackluster attempt at Melee. I really enjoy it, but it's trying to recreate something that can't be recreated. Melee was a beautiful accident. Nintendo caught lightning in a bottle and didn't even realize it. As much as I like PM, It'll never be Melee. Plus, sometimes PM feels like Melee with tech training wheels on.

3. :mario64:64: I don't play Smash64 much, but I respect it. Every time I watch it played at a competitive level I'm very impressed. I have a general understanding of the tech required to play competitively from talking to some 64 players, and I like that people still play it after so many years.

4. :4mario:Sm4sh for WiiU: This game, tbh, is not that great. But it looks good, it sounds good, it's got characters I've wanted to see in the series since 64 (MegaMan, Sonic, Diddy Kong), and I play it casually with my friends who don't even know smash can be competitive. I have a good time with it, for what it's worth. I don't think it belongs in tournament though.

5. :mario2:Brawl: Lol does anyone still talk about this game? Seriously, I know Diddy and Sonic came out in Brawl, not Sm4sh, but who cares? They're in Sm4sh. Sm4sh has made Brawl entirely obsolete imo. Melee wasn't made obsolete by Brawl, so what's Brawl's excuse? PoS if you ask me.

6. :4mario:Sm4sh for 3DS: This game is just a crappy handheld demo for a crappy smash game for crappy players. I'm pretty sure this only sold to impatient children, and it probably hasn't sold a single copy since Sm4sh for WiiU came out. Except maybe to eight year olds on road trips or something.

Most prefer PM I think, as it's made to be similar to Melee.

Here's my thoughts: Melee > PM > 64 > 4 > Brawl

I'd rank them like this: Melee > 4 > PM > 64 = Brawl

While I don't care too much for 64 or Brawl, I don't dislike them, and I'd happily play either at a tournament level.

One of the reasons why I like 64 is because its what created the Smash Bros series, but I don't consider it to be the best game in the series by a long shot.

My list goes: Melee>PM>Sm4sh>64>Brawl (it's still hella fun to play though :p)

Smash 4 is my second favorite game, because if I'm not playing melee, I like to relax with my friends on Smash 4. Eight player chaos is actually pretty fun.

Honestly, for me, it's: Melee>64>PM>Brawl>Smash 4 U> Smash 4 3DS. 64 is fun, but it has a high skill gap, and the scene is pretty small.

Yeah, my list is Melee>PM>64>Sm4sh>Brawl. There is a tiny gap between PM and 64, a gap the size of Norende between 64 and Sm4sh, and a small gap between Brawl and Sm4sh. I respect the intense punishes and combo game of 64, but enjoy the physics and speed from Melee and PM. Sm4sh and Brawl lack a lot of what made the first two games and PM competitive, but I don't feel like typing out all of my reasons why I don't like Sm4sh or Brawl; you can find them scattered around many places on the Melee boards.

Pretty much. Mostly because Melee is a sequel that actually tried to expand and improve on the original instead of changing a formula everyone liked by removing what was good (speed, combos) and adding crap no one wanted (except for :wolf:).

Also Mario was amazing in 64. One of the few characters that could actually recover which let you go off stage for a deep edge guard, which among other reasons is why I liked him so much.

Mario was amazing in 64.
Mario is always amazing.

But in all seriousness, I totally agree. Playing him in 64 as a kid was part of the reason I picked him up for Melee when I decided to get serious with it as an adult. Also, because his Melee combos looked really fun.

That and Super Mario All-Stars for SNES was my most prized possession when I was like 5... Never Forget

But this is completely off topic. Sorry. I have a Mario trigger.

I didn't know about L-cancelling (smooth landing) until I got into competitive Melee. After about 2 years of playing Melee, 64 went to Wii VC. When my friend told me L-cancelling worked in 64 and it was even better I said WTF. I was already comboing without it thanks to the hitstun of that game, but once I knew about it, holy crap even crazier stuff happened. It's still pretty fun to this day even if I'm not that good because of what I know is possible.

L-cancelling feels weirder to do in 64 with a GCN though because shield doesn't register until you press the triggers down all the way :[

Edit: Oh I forgot to answer the question. Yep, 64 is my second favorite.
