Is shield buffering a thing?

I'd like some info about shielding after attacks, and if it is possible/optimal to buffer your shield after an attack or otherwise. Let's say I whiff a laggy move on the ground. If I hold the L button during the animation, will my shield pop up during the first IASA frame of the attack? If not, what happens instead? I'm asking to try to figure out if timing my shield button press is best, or just letting it come out on it's own is just as effective.

Yes, you can also buffer rolls/jumping/spot dodges with the c-stick.
Say you want to do one of those actions on the first frame possible, hold shield and the c-stick in the appropriate direction and it will come out as soon as your character is able to perform said action.
Just holding the Shield button will buffer a shield though.
