If his computer won't likely run it well, why?

Very likely the comp is too old to even upgrade decently [CPU and all that].
There are slimmed versions of XP, like XP Corporation Performance Edition, which I ran on an 866MHz processor, 256MB of RAM, TNT2 video, just fine. It was a 12 year old computer.

Oh man. You'd be better off running Ubuntu and just using WINE for all your Windows applications. Windows ME is an abomination. You'd be better off even running Windows 98.

I agree on ME being an abomination.

Well, actually, I don't know much about it other than I used to use it. And I was so young and didn't even use internet yet.

At that time I was just happy to have a bloody computer, I thought unstability was the natural computer way.

I remember my first computer, a Windows 95 in the year 2000 <3

I had a windows 98 until 2004. One month we ordered the Dell 8200 and it was great but I hadn't updated anything in it until last month... It was NASTY. It must have had 100 games on it, you could click Firefox, go make a bag of popcorn, get a drink, watch a movie, beat Super Mario 64, build a new computer, write down the entire internet in one word document, and then it would open.

I think you beat me though in the out of date department. I say give up on the old thing. My pentium I is sitting in the other room staring at me. It hates me so much.

Yeah, I had ME when it was fairly new. It was terrible, even worse then the older ones I hear. Next to nothing was able to run on that thing and most games and pages wouldn't load properly and would leave a huge white spot on the page. It also came with Netscape (at least the one I had did..) and that thing was terrible to use.

We quickly changed to the newer version after that.

Seriously, give Linux a try. My favorite thing to do with old machines is revive them with really light operating systems. Or you can be awesome like my one friend and install Windows 3.1.

Man, I've never seen Windows boot so fast. @_@

^ Maybe Viruses, I don't know.

Nothing wrong with Linux unless you want to use Windows only programs. You could also put Windows 2000 [>>>> ME], but you have to buy it [or do "other methods"].

The best thing for you to do is suck it up until you can get a new computer. If you know somebody who can get a copy of XP/Vista/7, then you can get a pretty decent computer that will be able to do basic needs (not really much gaming but possible) for around 200-300 bux. It doesn't sound real, but the most costly part of a new computer is the OS and if you can get that from somebody then you'd be set.

DSL -> **** Small Linux, free distro, runs like a dream on any computer =P
Other than that, Linux Mint is amazing, I'm with Saw and others, run Linux! At least put it on a live disc, and try runnin it off the disc for a while to see if you like it. =]
