Is it rude to ask for thinking time?

Sometimes I get wrecked in a match in tourney and I try to take it all in and process everything. But I always feel like it's rude if I take too long to think about stuff and it might come across as delaying/stalling. Most people seem to want to jump into the next match.

Is it rude/bad tourney etiquette to ask for a minute for thinking?

No, it'd be rude if people were rushing you / disrupting your thinking.

After a tournament game, if someone rushes into a match before I'm ready I say hold on, I might swap characters. You have every right to say that and take the time you need. You don't have to swap characters but it's a non-invasive way of taking a minute to think before you start your next match.

It isn't rude to ask for 1-2 minutes to re-think your strategy. But 5-10 minutes? Your opponent will loose the rythm of his game and you will delay another matches so It would be an offense to not just your opponent but also other players.

I take at least 1 minute between matches to think about my opponent and their style, asking for time to think in Smash is about as rude as it is to take time to think in chess.

asking for time to think in Smash is about as rude as it is to take time to think in chess.
It's rude in speed chess...

But in all seriousness, think away. Just as long as you don't sit there with a dumb look on your face for fifteen minutes and hold up the tournament. Pretty sure speed smash isn't a thing, so don't let someone tell you it's rude because they've got ants in their pants.

in speed chess you've agreed to a set of rules beforehand and each turn takes time.
that's clearly not the comparison Losho was making...

Anyway, id consider it more rude for someone to start the game before you're ready.
Asking is the least rude.

If you ask and they say 'can we start sooner' you can come to a compromise.

The speed chess comment was a joke. But I agree. It's much more rude for someone to rush a game when the other player isn't ready. Anyone who is willing to argue with you over giving yourself a minute or two to collect your thoughts is probably an a-hole anyway.

Considering some people take 5 and a half years striking stages? Nah, sit at the character select screen for as long as you need to. You won't get in trouble for taking time to think so take advantage of it. Even if in the middle of the game you die, chill on the respawn platform a bit to gather your thoughts before rushing down there.
