Is it possible to play Project M with my N64 controllers?

I searched the forum and couldn't find any posts on the subject. I'm waiting for my n64 controller to usb adapter to arrive. Once it does I know I can play Smash 64 online through netplay just wondering if I can play Project M also? I was under the impression I could emulate Project M or do I have to to play on a Wii ?
