Is it necessary to use X/Y to jump to be good?

I was raised on the control stick, and it feels intuitive to me. It's a hard habit to shake. I'm trying to pull of aerials with the C-stick while using X to jump, and I find it pretty difficult. Is it possible to be a top level player and use tap jump? Is there a way to turn it off?

So your question isn't whether it's possible, but whether it's generally a good idea?

It's easier for most people to do stuff with a jump button (e.g. perfect control over your aerial momentum, consistent short hops, wave dashes), but it's not written in stone that it's the easier way for you.

I became PR level in my state using the control stick to jump.

I switched from the control stick to the X button, and it was a great improvement, but I have several years of control stick habits, and I still have some troubles from it.

Please use the X and Y buttons before the control stick habit becomes too much.

You're using the same finger to jump and attack. X to C stick is a lot of distance on a controller. If you want to use X to jump, use the control stick to hit a direction and A or Z to attack

I've always used X, and I only use control stick for when I play fox/falco and jump out of shine for shine bairs and whatnot.
I used to use control stick to jump, and I feel like I improved a lot more after using a jump button.

Use x and y for real if you tap to jump you can't wave dash and its really hard to shorthop
To wave dash you would have to move your control stick up and down 9 frames with :bowser:7 frames with :link::ganondorfmelee::zeldamelee: 6 frames :dk::falcomelee::039::150::peachmelee::roymelee::yoshimelee: 5 frames :falconmelee::drmario::luigi::mario::marthmelee::gawmelee::nessmelee::younglinkmelee: 4 frames:foxmelee::icsmelee::kirbymelee::025::172::samus::sheikmelee: and this game run on 60 frames per second you wound have to tap then be in a neutral position in that time span to short hop and once you do that you have to go :GCU::GCDL::GCRT: in that amount of time that is 0.15 of a second for 9 frames the slowest I'm not going to do other times but divide the frames to jump by 60 ex.4/60 that's how many seconds to do a short hop or wave dash

Uh, I'm using the stick to jump since the beginning and I'm okay with it.

I'm using L to L-Cancel, R to wavedash, C-stick for aerials and the stick to jump. I never use X, I only use Y to multishine. It's been so many years that I'm using this, I don't want to change.

I don't have any problems with shorthop and wavedash. I can do it consistently without having troubles.

I think it's fine. You might struggle with some things but you just do what YOU want to do.
