Is it just me or is short hopping harder with certain characters?

I'm not a beginner or anything, I hit short hops without even thinking about it, but I'm recently starting to play new characters and I find that I'm not getting them a lot. The amount that I get them is like 50/50 and it's really annoying. Do you actually have to input it faster or something on certain characters?
The character I'm seeing this happen with the most is Shiek if it matters, and the second most is Fox. For reference, I never miss short hops on Captain Falcon or Marth. NEVER.

Characters have varying amounts of jumpsquat frames, which determine the leniency of short hopping. Fox, Pikachu, and a few others have a 3-frame jumpsquat.

An important thing to know about short hopping: it's based on quickly you release the jump button -- how long the button is held down. So it's not about pushing it down fast, but pulling back fast.

Might be obvious to some people, but I've ran into quite a few that get this wrong and it really messes them up.

I knew that, but thanks for making sure. This is the hardest part to explain to my friends when they ask how I do what I do.

Hmm, I always had issues short hopping with the button inputs compared to the joystick jump, maybe this is why.
