Is Falco's wavedash supposed to be so clunky?

Does anyone else have a lot of problems chaining wavedashes with Falco? I have no problem with most characters but his timing is just so weird to me

Like Marth's timing is super smooth and forgiving. And character like fox or shiek have really fast wavedashes, like almost pushing x and r at the same time so its easy to remember. Falco however, has a fast jump, but a long delay before he actually jumps because he bends his knees for a moment. This means you have a really small frame that the wavedash actually works in and the timing just feels slow and clunky to me. If you push r too fast after the jump, you just jump and ignore the dash

I know you guys cant see my hands so you can't comment on what I'm doing wrong, but has anybody else been frustrated by this and eventually figured it out? Let me know what you made you understand it, or if you think its just a matter of practice, tell me what sort of practice helped you most.

I see players like Dr PP just chain wavedashes rapidly with falco and I don't understand how its possible. Thoughts?

It's hard to explain without being really vague. Foxes WD like you said, is pressing jump and L/R almost simultaneously whereas falcos, you just wait a tad longer.

Any chance you could post a video that shows what it looks like when you try?

imo the difference with this WD (besides the timing) is the stick direction; a little more downward, which makes it a little shorter and harder, but when you get used to it is so easy and smooth

Falco's wavedash is not as long as Fox's, or Marth's or many other characters' wavedashes. I, for one, wavedash with the control stick, so I find the delayed timing works perfectly, since I need a moment to get to the right stick position. Fox's I can do, but it requires a crazy intense twitch motion. I can do Falco's wavedash, and chain them very easily. I find chain waveland into wavedash or waveshine into wavedash more useful than just chaining straight wavedashes. But for mindgames, it is incredibly effective.

My opinion? Wavedash with the control stick like I do :D lol

But in all seriousness, his wavedash is definitely not supposed to be clunky. Work on the timing.

You're going too fast. Falco takes longer to jump than fox, so you need to airdodge later. It sucks at first, but you'll get used to it.

Definitely DO NOT use the stick to WD...

If you are doing WDs perfectly, it doesn't matter how fast a character's jump accelerates. The only thing that matters timing wise is how fast they leave the ground. Here is a frame-by-frame breakdown of WDs for a few characters for comparison purposes:

Fox
1. Jumpsquat
2. Jumpsquat
3. Jumpsquat
4. (first airborne frame) Airdodge

Marth
1. Jumpsquat
2. Jumpsquat
3. Jumpsquat
4. Jumpsquat
5. (first airborne frame) Airdodge

Falco
1. Jumpsquat
2. Jumpsquat
3. Jumpsquat
4. Jumpsquat
5. Jumpsquat
6. (first airborne frame) Airdodge

As you can see, the WDs work identically except with each character having more or less frames spent in jumpsquat, which is just that crouching animation immediately preceding the jump itself. Your goal should be to airdodge on the first possible frame. Airdodging on frame 5 for Falco will result in just the empty jump like you said, and airdodging on frames after the first possible one will result in a small gap between when you airdodge and when you land on the ground. When you let the character get off the ground and airdodge, you waste a lot of momentum, resulting in short and stubby WDs.

I recommend going into Training Mode and lowering the speed to 1/4th so you can visually see what is going on after you press Y. You will see Falco go into jumpsquat, and then you will see him as he leaves the ground. Then you can try airdodging as soon as he leaves the ground to see what a smooth WD should look like. Do not PRACTICE WDing on lower speeds because that will only mess you up. I am only suggesting this because it usually helps to be able to visualize what you want. If you can already WD with decent consistency with other characters, all you have to do is just slow it down the smallest amount possible. Just practice, practice, practice with Falco specifically until you have the timing down. I've been WDing for years, and I still have to warm up my WDing when I switch between Fox and Falco, so trying to constantly change who you WD with will only make it harder for you to get into a good pattern for WD speed.

its not clunky, the timing is different then with most characters you have to aim closer to down then to the right or left

Are you still havin trouble? I'll upload a video where you can see the hands, just so you can get the basic idea. Also might include footage of the hands doing ledge stuff :)
