Overall, the discord communication system is a revolutionary tool for all gamers in any franchise. That being said, I would like to cover why it is good specifically for the smash community as a whole. Throughout my time using Discord, I have been finding many uses and tricks for it. Many of the tools it offers are extraordinary for efficiency and organization. I will not cover the in depth tools that Discord has, but I will discuss the main ones that I find useful for smash. So what makes Discord so great?
Roles:
Roles are specifically for organizational purposes. They allow you to give people different tags which tell you which category they fall under. I myself use it to differentiate between the smash player I have and which platform they play smash on.
Easily being able to identify who plays on what platform makes it incredibly easy to announce and organize tournaments to that specific group of people. If I am hosting a Wii U tournament, I can type @Wii U players in my chat to get only their attention.
Once I get their attention, I can give those who are able to participate in the tournament an “@tourney participant” role so I can easily identify who specifically wants to take part.
Rolling… get it?
Text chat:
Text chat is great for holding conversations with those who don't have a microphone and for those who don't particularly feel comfortable speaking through any medium but text. You can use the Discord text system like any other group message. You can also use the role system to mention anyone/ any group of people specifically.
For people with crews/ teams, an announcements chat is very common. You can set it so only specific people have permission to type in it and give out global announcements using the role system. This is good for announcing events, or just telling everyone that they are doing a great job!
Making a chat for any topic is possible. For my new Esports organization, I have a chat called info-THoG which only I can write in. I use this chat to write about the background of our organization and what we are all about. I also give some answers to general questions I get asked about the community.
Voice Chat:
Communication is key for any game. The ability to discuss strategy, or simply being able to laugh while screwing around are a must for any game to be fun. With the voice chat system, you basically get a great version of skype without having to use it. You can also have multiple chat rooms which have the ability to be locked by certain permissions.
This makes doubles very easy to participate in online. Having the ability to talk about your strategy with your partner is crucial to being a well oiled team combo machine. Having your opponents in the next chat room next to you makes it easy to go talk smack after you have beaten them
Twitch/YouTube integration:
This is another simple, yet powerful tool which can help you bring your existing fan base to your server and make you community grow with an organized structure. You can also indicate that you are streaming to your entire Discord server at any point to let your members know.
Bots:
As your following increases, and your population grows, you can add a Bot to your server to help you take care of things automatically. Bots have unlimited uses, and functionality. You can make a bot from scratch with coding to do whatever you want, or you can find a premade one from Discord users all over the world. These bots can do anything from post memes on command, to welcoming anyone that joins the server, to creating/assigning a role to anyone. You can set permissions on basically anything that a bot does and who is able to access which commands to make sure it is used appropriately.
Wrapping it up:
To answer my own question, yes, Discord is very healthy for the Smash community. These are only a few of the reasons that I found Discord to be incredibly useful to me and my community. Without it, I can almost guarantee that The House of Gaming would not have been nearly as successful. If anyone wants to talk about any other tools that they have found helpful on discord, feel free to leave a comment!
