A local Smash Tourney is being held in my city tomorrow, and I want to enter but I'm not sure how competitive they're gonna be. I've never been to one before, and most of my competitive practice is against Lvl 50 Amiibos and Lvl 9 CPUs. It's going to be on Wii U but I only have the 3DS version. If anyone could guide me a little on higher levels of competitive play, it would be really awesome. Maybe like some online practice perhaps. If you could help out, give me a PM? Is there like a page discussion?

First tip, DO NOT play like you're playing against a cpu. Level 9 cpu's and lvl 50 amiibos aren't difficult, and they do not know how to play mind games. Decent players generally won't walk into your smash attacks. Have you tried playing online? FG isn't perfect, but it's far better practice than playing against amiibos.

On For Glory I don't do super well (The times I have tried it) and it usually takes em a couple matches with a person to figure out their gimmick(rehearsed combo cough cough), and that's IF they don't change characters. The highest my win rate's ever been is like 35%, although that's out of very few times.

That's not a great sign. Playing in tournaments would be a lot like playing in FG except with better average opponents. If you can't win most matches in FG, you almost certainly won't win most matches in a tournament. Practice online, against human players, or you will be very salty when human players don't react in the predictable way that CPUs do. Keep playing and learning matchups until you get better. If you want slightly better competition try Anther's Ladder. It's a site where you can play against other smash bros players in a more competitive environment.

But yeah, play against humans, drop the amiibo strategy. computers are good for training your combos, and not much else.

OK, thank you! I will definitely do a lot of that today. Do you have any Falcon tips? I picked him up as a main a while ago because of his glorious knee of justice and spike.

hmm, where to start. I play on the WII U, so if you ever get that version try adding me NNID: Stancosmos.
I think one of C.Fals greatest strengths in tournament is that he's actually quite good against diddy kong. So you don't need to worry about that match up much. Falcon applies amazing pressure, use his dash-grab freely, it has crazy range. Down-throw to up-air almost always works, but if you notice your opponent mashs the dodge button every time you downthrow, run under where he's going to land and UpSmash instead. Don't spam falcon punch/Falcon knee. They are good attacks, but when they miss you will almost certainly get punished for it, if you play a match and attempt falcon punch 5 times and only land it once, it wasn't worth it because you probably took a ton of damage the 4 times you missed it. His safest attack is his up-air and back-air. both very good options. falcon kick and raptor boost i use to chase rolls. Recovering low and grabbing the edge is usually the safest option, but not always. He has a bit of lackluster recovery, but he falls fast so you can usually recover before the opponent has a chance to stop you. If an opponent approaches in the air, just shield. there's nothing they can do to break a shield from the air unless its a bowser down-B.

So, is spot-dodging as good in Sm4sh? Like if someone's coming in from the air or dash attack can I spot-dodge safely? And what about his rolls?

Yes and no, Spot dodging is basically a hard read. If you know what the opponent is gonna do you can dodge it, but you need good timing. I used to practice this by playing matches against my friends (CPUs would work) where they all had rayguns, and i would just run around dodging ray gun bullets until i got used to the timing. Again though this was just to get used to dodge timing, not a lot of transferable skill in beating down raygun carrieng CPUs. His rolls are good too, but be careful, the safest option is often a shield / shield-grab. I roll fairly often with falcon, but against high level players watch out, if you constantly roll in the same direction your opponent will catch on and start to predict your rolls and punish you. So mix it up, rolling away isn't always the safest option. Mix up rolling away, rolling in, spot dodging, shield cancelling runs, shield grabs. It largely comes down to timing.

also if somemone is coming in from the air, it's easier to just shield and wait. Falcon is fast enough that as soon as they land you can dash in and dash/attack or dash/grab during their landing lag.

Oh my gosh, thank you SO much for helping me with this. I have to share one TV with others so I'm gonna practice on 3DS For Glory for now, but maybe we could play each other later.

absolutely. I'd be willing to help you train if you need. There's a lot to learn, but the most valuable skill a smash player can have is the ability to read an opponent. Keep your eyes open for patterns, find out what your opponent commonly does and anticipate/punish it.

As far as I know about the tournament setting, I won't have more than one match to see what my opponent will do. Maybe tournaments are set up differently... but it's just a local little thing so IDK

EDIT: I do know you can figure out what they will do in one match.

Yeah generally you'd need a few matches to really feel out an opponent. Falcon is an expert and punishing though, with the speed of his run he only needs a split second to be in the opponents face if they whiff a move.

SO true! I've been playing For Glory and have about half victories and half loss so far out of a couple fights. Falcon is a BOSS at punishing for sure. I lost a really close match to Little Mac because of a mid-air counter.

Another thing I found is the tip of a Falcon Punch (like the head of the fire falcon) can hit a F-Smashing Pikachu if you space it correctly. And it feels gooood
