(FYI I'm learning Falcon, if there are particular answers for him)

1. Does most everyone use the basic controller layout?
2. SH with the control stick or X/Y?
3. Aerials with c-stick? Nair w/ z?
4. I'm learning to SHFFL, do most people actually use L, or is Z better?

If there's a better place for questions like this, or if they've already been answered and I just haven't seen them, do point me in the right direction. Thanks,

Most of these are preference.

Technically Z is better than L or R for L Cancelling as it won't lock you out of teaching but I don't think it carries into Melee if you ever start learning Melee.

Personally I use a combination of direction + A and C Stick for aerials depending on what's happening

Do whatever feels most comfortable and won't break your hands.

Thanks for the speedy reply!

I'm having a hard time with SHFFLing, getting from X to c-stick to get the aerial out at a reasonable frame. But double-sticking (SH w/ control stick + aerial w/ c-stick) seems really imprecise.

I use X to SH and stuff as well as probably a ton of other people so it's definitely possible.

Practice using A until you're super comfortable short hopping (more on this below kinda). Depending on your character you might not need the aerial out super soon. I use C Stick typically for aerials except when trying to get the aerial out super early. This was kinda a ramble.

One of the problems might be not moving your thumb as soon as you hit the jump button. Tap and go for a flick on the C Stick.

You could also try out using Y to jump

One bad habit I've picked up in PM is uair's with the controlstick+A. If you switch to Meele, and you are used to smashing the control stick up, you just blow your double jump and get into your own head.

Also, I use R for both teching and l-cancelling. It's not 'optimal or efficient' but I swear my left index finger has a mind of its own so I don't give it any responsibility.

I also rotate my hand to claw grip when I jc-shine with Falco. And yeah. That might sound awkward, sliding your hand around the controller all the time(lots of shines :))

At the end of the day, if the only way you can double waveshine across FD into shinegrab is by pressing the b-button with your tounge, it doesn't really matter how you do it as long as you are consistent and it works.

I'm fairly certain this is the wrong way around, avoid's triggering the tech window in Melee but not in PM. I could be wrong though.

Soft press L or R are best for L-canceling as they won't trigger your tech window. Z will, and obv full press L/R will as well. I forget whether or not Z triggers tech window in Melee tho

Use whatever scheme or buttons that work for you. If you get used to it, Tap Jump off may be slightly preferred because you can SDI upward inputs without worrying about burning your DJ (burning DJ while getting hit is usually very lethal problem as Falcon).

I play with normal controls. I use whatever button or stick seems most efficient for the situation. Example: C-stick Knee is generally not needed unless you don't want or need some forward momentum. Some DJ aerials, or double Uairs, I use a combination of Y for first jump and Up-Control stick for the DJ (95% of the time, it's for instant DJ Uair followups)

With regards to l-cancelling, when I was first starting out, for some reason I found jumping w/ x and shielding with y was real good for me. This meant I could SHFFL by basically moving my thumb from x(jump)->a(aerial)->y(l-cancel) in a circular fashion. Eventually however, I adjusted to using R instead of y.

Like it's stated above, do what feels natural, but don't be afraid to experiment. I've seen some weird control schemes by people who're waaaaaaay better than me that work for them (eg jump R attack L shield Z, footstool y).
