Smash Wii U Input Consistency

I've always had trouble with the consistency of my input. For example, I will dash attack when I mean to forward smash, up smash when I mean to up tilt, shield when I mean to roll, forward B when I mean to neutral B, etc. I tried setting my D Pad to attack under the impression that pressing up on the dpad would allow me to consistently up tilt, but that does not work. Is there any way to work on this besides just playing? I have been actively making an effort to try to change this but it doesn't seem to help. Any advice?

Also should be noted: I've only been playing for a couple months and am restricted to using the Wii U Gamepad.

Do you play with tap jumping on or off? Some inputs (say, up tilt) are arguably easier with it disabled, some might be easier with it enabled (Shield-to-Up-Smash), but neither are impossible on any setup. I play with it enabled, and using up tilts in it is a matter of practice.
Well, I have to know how to Up Tilt, I'm a Mario main, heh.

This isn't something you can fix in fights. You're going to have to go to training mode and slog it out until you can comfortably do what you want to.
Set goals for yourself and learn particular strings/combos for your character. Be sure you can pull them off consistently. You shouldn't feel like you have to fight the game as well as your opponent.

If you press down on the C-stick while running, it will do a dash attack, which can also prevent you from doing smashes after another smash ends.

In general it just sounds like you just need to play the game more. It's something you'll get used to over time. Though I will say, I felt that tilts were difficult on the gamepad before I had a Smash controller.
