hello smashers! ive been playing for years but am just now getting into the online scene, but now im running into issues i havent been able to solve on my own.

the problem: when i try to join games (or host) it is very choppy and unplayable with other people. my ping is usually around ~50-100ms and im getting fine fps. I dont know what's causing it but im getting a message something about my packets? Right now that is set to LAN 60/s. the game is choppy and the audio is desync'd as well. i know the cause for these kinds of problems are numerous so dont hesitate to ask for more relevant information! i will check back here often over the next few days

does anybody know why this might happen? im fairly sure im running working plugins (according to a guide i followed from a sticky here). So i really have no idea what is making me have these problems. im sure the well established community of ssb64 smashers can offer some solution, thanks!!!

This doesn't happen offline right? If it does you need a better computer.
Audio desynch is strange, never seen that.

50-100ms is kind of a big margin. You might just have to get a better internet service.
Run http://pingtest.net/ and see if you get any packet loss.

Also what's your location?

offline play works well. the audio problem is probably just a product of whatever real problem is making my play choppy.

ran that test got 0% packet loss, 58 ms ping, 22 jitter. and i live in PA

edit: test 2 even better, 29 ping 6 jitter

Nobody seems to take my advice when told to run this: http://ndt.anl.gov:7123/

:( :( :(

If you see anything about packet queuing, you won't be able to play without massive lag spikes.

That ping test is bull****, because packet loss is one thing, while packet queuing is a whole different animal.

it's really weird if your ping suddenly drops like that unless you changed test servers in-between or stopped downloading/uploading
i may have hit change server when i ran the 2nd time. in fact, im pretty sure i did. regardless i dont think ping is the issue

ok i ran that test im gonna copy and paste the "statistics," let me know the next step to fixing this issue i wanna get online and smash!

edit: not letting me copy/paste. here's what it says about packets.

"web100 reports the round trip time = 73.69 ms; the packet size = 1460 bytes; and
20 packets retransmitted, 380 duplicate acks received, and 202 SACK blocks received
the connection was idle 0 seconds (0% of the time)
s2c throughput test: PACKET QUEUING DETECTED: 0.58%4
this cannection is sender limited 1.83% of the time
this connection is network limited 97.88% of the time."

Do you have to run this test when someone else is using internet too? It's probably a dumb question, but I don't know anything about internet stuff (I already don't know much about computer science in general).

does anyone know how to fix this lag? when i press LAGSTAT the other players have little to none and mine is skyrocketing into the hundreds.

im running project64k that you get from this link http://pj64k.blogspot.com/ !!!!!!!

ive been scouring the internet the last 36 hours desperately trying to get this to work but to no avail. the link above is what i found to be the most recent and was applicable to win7.

surely there is a solution to this, given the test results ive posted and knowing my computer can handle the game. my controller adapter is going to be here in the next few days and i would really love for this to be working!

edit: i suppose its also worth noting that my roommates play a lot of battlefield and watch a lot of netflix. sometimes they experience lag as well. is this as simple as the issue is? because i believe it is possible for us to get a stronger internet package

edit2: its also worth noting that the game is slightly playable, i won against a few people but im sure my lag was interfering with them as well. either way they didnt seem to be playing that skillfully so whatever yea. the game is just always continuously skipping a little bit. just wanted to include this as it might validate that its an internet/bandwith issue?

are your roommates playing battlefield/watching netflix/torrenting/anything while you're trying to play?

If everybody else is having problems, then it's most likely your connection.

Are you on a college campus? Most uni internets are unusable for online smash play due to packet problems and network congestion.

yes often times my roommates are playing and doing ****. its worth noting that right now in the MORNING i can play with no lag!!!!! and youre right again, i am playing at school. not on campus but in the apartments above campus its all students.

i think its just an internet thing, im gonna either play in the mornings or get my roommate in charge of the internet to get a better package because other people can play games and do whatever without any problems.

thanks so much guys! you helped a lot and very quickly. my name is smashmebabe im on the galaxy looking for good people!

It's worth noting that kaillera works differently from regular online games (xbox, playstation, etc.) in that it's structured like ****. kaillera requires that every single packet be sent and received on time, and if anything goes hokey (even the best connection isn't perfect), you'll experience a lag spike.

Other online services only require that "most" of the packets be transferred, or actually buffer the lag so all packets have time to get there in the event of some hokiness (more lag). It's really not noticeable unless you're playing a fighting game (ever played Brawl online?)

So, in conclusion, you should play when network congestion is at its least. If there truly are only a few people on your network, you shouldn't have a hard time figuring out when nobody's on.

Otherwise, the best times are usually wee hours of the morning, the morning for normal people, and early-mid afternoon. Forget about using kaillera at night.
