Improving Neutral/Reads

So it's recently come to my attention that I'm really bad in neutral and pretty much any situation where I'm not in control. Up to this point, I've played pretty exclusively against bots, with the intention of improving tech and that my neutral would improve naturally. So for a while, whenever I would play with friends, I was able to steamroll them with tech, and neutral be damned. Now that my friends are improving or playing around my dependence on tech, I'm getting destroyed in most games. So besides just playing more and focusing on analyzing play, is there anything I can do to improve the non-technical aspect of my game?
I play Falco/Falcon if that's relevant, but open to picking up a new character.

You need to vary your approaches to avoid getting read. Short and full hops are mix ups. Doing a second shine is a great mix up as falco. Not approaching and camping with lasers is a good mix up as well.
