I don't consider myself that good at Melee, but I started following and training in competitive Melee over a year ago so I have at least that much experience. I usually start my friendlies as Ness to test the waters.

I can beat my Sheik-playing opponent with Ness so I assume that he's not very good. After a few Ness rounds I've had my fix and I switch to my "secondaries" first Peach, then Ganon.

The match as Ganon was the single biggest ass-whooping I've ever dealt.

Sure he was Roy for that match, but I started having some fun and going for (and landing) multiple stomps in a row and obvious warlock kicks. Ended up 4-stocking him.

He left saying "well, you're obviously better than me".

...

I'm actually really happy because I can still remember when I was in a newbie situation like he was, and I've improved so much. But at the same time I feel kinda bad because I was just trying to have some fun, and didn't mean any intentional disrespect.

I'm sorry... I guess?

The best respect you can give to your opponent is to try your best to win

He'll improve as he keeps playing too. Melee's a pretty fun game even when you lose. Defeat isn't as bad as people seem to think it is

Pretty much this.

Bask in your glorious victory/combo/destruction. A lot of people call it "disrespect", but I think it is more showing off than it is disrespect. Disrespect is only if you are purposely not trying to win, like you forgo a killing move to extend the match and toy with them a little more, or maybe pick a bad character that you don't normally play.

One of the things that really got me into this game was the realisation that I was absolutely terrible at it, and that there was an insanely long way to go (in terms of skill) before I could consider myself good.
