Hi, I'm halite. I started playing competitively in late June, so about a month and a half. When I went to my first tourney, I found out that most of the people had been playing competitively for many years, and then as serious casuals years before that.

I had the game as a kid, but I thought it was pretty mindless. It wasn't until earlier this year, when my friend showed me what competitive smash looked like, that I had any interest in the game. I didn't have a setup to practice with, so I just kind of played pretty intermittently. And I went to my first tournament with a beat up controller I bought the day before. I got my behind handed to me hard, and I'm still terrible. But that's how it goes.

Is it unusual for people to go straight into competitive? Or are there more bottom feeders like me at tournaments? :p

Welcome! That was brave of you! I have been an extremely casual player for a couple years and just recently have taken to the boards and actually started reading up on characters and such. Never realized how bad I was. lol Do you play Brawl, PM or both?

Hey! I totally feel you. I've been a serious casual since the first Smash, and did a couple of tourneys for fun years ago and got knocked out pretty quickly. I would love to do a tourney just because I love playing Smash, but I am terrified of going up against super elites. The YouTube videos are a total psyche-out. I seriously think doing a tourney requires uber training with your friends beforehand.

First off, welcome to the forums, halite!

As for your question, no, it's not really unusual for people to go straight into the competitive scene with the game. It just takes time and practice for one to really get good at it. There are plenty of people out there that have joined the competitive scene much later than others, but have been able to hold their own in tournaments pretty well after getting used to things, so don't get too discouraged. Tournaments are great for experience, so it's best to simply go in with the mindset of just wanting to play new people and have fun rather than focusing on the winning aspect of it. If you really do want to learn competitive Smash, you could start off with this guide if you're interested.

Best wishes :)

Thanks for the warm welcome! To answer the above question, I play mostly Melee, but dabble in PM. I main Pikachu, partially from Yellow Version nostalgia and partially because Axe is such a huge inspiration to me.

So far, the competitive scene has been very friendly and helpful. I definitely don't regret going straight to competitive, especially since I don't have the fear of losing/playing smashers much better than I am. I'm seeing a lot of improvement as a result.

Hope to see you all in the future!
