I'm new to tournaments and I have questions.

How do I know which tournaments are worth going to and which aren't? I really don't want to drive quite a distance and end up getting a tournament with only 10-15 people in it.

And what are the chances that I would ever see one of the top players? If possible, it would be really neat to meet them.

I plan to go to tournaments when Smash 4 comes out. I would love to jump in to melee, but I don't feel like it would be worth since I hadn't been playing in the beginning of melee. I do regret not being a competitive melee player, but I would rather start from the beginning of a game than to hope in this many years since that game became big. I hope in smash bros 4, I can make a name for myself and my group of friends and that I see you all at tourneys!

Answers and advice please :)

check the facebook event if there is one and see how many posts/attendees are showing up for it, check the smashboards thread and see how many RSVPs and posts are there (this is a very deceiving number because lots of responses usually = lots of attendees but not necessarily), but better yet look up results threads from your area, see how many people entered those tournaments and who entered

smash 4 looks like it'll be a shoe-in for attendance but it doesnt hurt to research your region's recent history!

depends where you live honestly

if you live close to a top player you will probably meet them

Hmm. I live in Middle MN and I think we'd be willing to drive around 10 hours to tournaments. Unless the tourneys were REALLY big, then we'd drive farther.

I just thought of another question. Do people ever make up team names for their little group of friends and show up at tournaments with matching coats with a team insignia on them? Does that make you look like jerks? Do people know it's all in good fun? What do players think of stuff like that?

Yes, that happens sometimes, and there's some weight behind starting that in MN.

Hoping to see you at some events, fellow Minnesotan! We have plenty. :)
