I don't really join forums to often because I kind of feel shy in them, but I really love smash, and felt like maybe possibly discussing it with you fellow people. For me, the hours I put into each of the games:
Melee (Childhood game) > Brawl (I like all Smash games...alrighty?) > Smash 3DS (So far.) > SSB64 (Starting to play it a bit more) > PM (Don't own it, but play it whenever going to friend's houses) > SSBU (I played one match as greninja at the smash-fest event.)
I was wondering if anyone does want to play Smash for 3DS, I'd be up, but not sure if friend code exchanging is a rule here or anything. (Sorry if I already broke any rules in this post already)
Anything I should know about forums? I hardly use them, I usually keep my thoughts to myself and friends. I was curious if there was any way to change the amount of mains I have in each game, because I usually stick to multiple characters, not just one. (I'm a noob, I know.) Anyways...thanks to anyone that actually took time out of their day to read this. I hope to get along with all of you and happy smashing!

Hey, welcome to Smashboards. :)

Don't be so nervous, you like Smash, people here like Smash, you'll be fine. There's no general "rules" about forums, except enjoy yourself. There's no way to change the amount of mains in each game (I too usually stick to multiple... although this is the first game that I've really stuck to one so far). A lot of people put their mains in their signature (found under your profile settings), which appears on each post.

I'd advise going here first: http://smashboards.com/forums/welcome-center-meet-greet.231/ That's where most people make posts like the post you just made, and usually someone is wandering those boards looking to help/make friends.

For friend-code sharing/looking for matches: http://smashboards.com/threads/the-3ds-friend-code-sharing-thread.340319/unread

Enjoy!

I'm up for playing some time (though I'm a college student, so my schedule is somewhat erratic), my friend code is under my avatar. Posting friend codes is fine, though the Friend Code Sharing Thread is an easier place to do it (aside from posting it in your profile, in which case it shows up like mine does).

Forums in general are for discussing things, typically related to the forum you join. As you can probably figure out glancing around, a lot of the discussion here is tournament organization, competitive discussion (legality, character strengths and weaknesses, techniques, and so on), random chatter, speculation (less so now that the 3DS version is out), and so on.

It's good to contribute your thoughts to threads, but it's also important to understand that not only does everyone have their own opinions about things, but there are also certain stances that will in general be frowned upon more than others. In particular, the majority of this board has a rather competitive slant - there's no problem with discussing items/crazy stages/etc, but it's important not to take a blatantly anti-competitive viewpoint. Likewise, you alienate a different group of people by being anti-casual, but I think it's fair to say you'll get blasted harder if you attack competitive-style play.

As for forum guidelines in general, there are stickies and other places to read the specifics, but in general:
  • Be polite
  • Don't double post, use the Edit button instead (exceptions are normally made for tournament threads, as it often takes two posts to detail everything fully, and it's best if those are both at the top of the thread)
  • Don't troll or deliberately flame people. See the first guideline. It's fine to have your own opinion, but either be ready to back it up respectfully (even if your opponents don't give you the same courtesy), or leave the debate altogether.
  • Try to avoid discussing superiority of different games, it's a very volatile topic. If you do say anything of the sort, try your hardest to make it clear that it's your opinion. Unless the statement is an objective fact (for example, safe statement: Melee is a faster-moving game, dangerous statement: Melee was better). Just be wary of how you term things, as this is a place for all Smash fans to discuss things. If you prefer a particular game, there are subforums in which those can specifically be discussed.
As for the mains listed, I understand your pain, but the avatar box and profile sections only show one each. Many players put their full list in their signature using the emoticon options.

My suggestion for getting used to boards and posting is to go through new threads as they pop up, read over them, and contribute a post or two. That way, you'll start learning who's who, the general views people hold, and you'll get better at posting your thoughts. Some people are short, sweet, and to the point. Some, like me, like to type a small novel for each post. Most are in between. Like any other activity, forum use takes some getting used to.

So yeah, welcome to Smashboards, hope you enjoy the stay. Plenty of good people here no matter your skill level or mode preference. And again, send me a message via a PM (wonderful, isn't it, how Private Message and Project M have the same abbreviation?) or a reply with your code, and hit me up for a game some time. I'm a far shot from pro, but at least one of us is bound to learn from the other.
