Heya! I just played in a tournament the other day with a wicked Olimar player, and I had the most ridiculous time getting hits on him. He was one of the Pikmin campers that kept his distance, and when I approached he would either fsmash, negating my dash attack, and if I tried to get him from above, his Ub and Usmash would make quick work of me. Even when I managed to dodge his Up attacks, his Dsmash would clear me away before I could recover. What are some suggests for handling a camping Olimar player with Mario?

Also, I can never seem to get Mario's Fair spike right. I always manage to miss (which just means I need to practice more) or it hits and simply does minimal damage with a little knockback. Could someone explain to me the mechanics of the attack so I could better understand how to use it properly?

Note: I'm not too savvy with abbreviations of Techs, so if you recommend one could you please spell it out for me so I can look it up properly if I happen to not know what it is?

Thanks for the help!

If he is camping im assuming he is spamming pikmin from a distance, which means that you should be caping his pikmin back at him. Next time when you dash toward him try short hopping over his f-smash and using your bair on him. You should be able to clear his smash and land your bair and then you can follow up with some u-airs or more b-airs. You can also short hop over his f-smash and nair him, followed by a d-smash. If you manage to get up close to him spot-dodge his smash and punish him

Also, use lots of fireballs since olimar is weak against them so he will be forced to rush you or jump on top of you in which case you can aerial him. Once olimar is off a ledge if you are having trouble landing your meteor smash use your b-air/cape instead to push him off further. Olimar is really prone to ledge-hogging too since his ledge grabbing extension only lasts a few frames.

Your best bet is to play the camping game with him. Mario has an advantage against olimar because you can cape his pikmin spam back at him and follow up with fireballs. He will eventually give up on camping and move to a more offensive strategy and then you can punish him.

Oh wow, it never occurred to me that I could cape his Pikmin. I knew it worked with everything else, but I subconsciously assumed since the Pikmin were under his control they wouldn't attack him like an opponent. I'll have to mess around with that. That GREATLY changes things. ^^;;

One of my best buddies plays Olimar so I know the match-up pretty well...
----
1) It's all about pressure...land attacks on him before he can get them on you

2) Caping the pikmin is one of the greatest things...I find caping the Yellow is the most effective cause those actually seem to hit Olimar more

3) Don't try to cape Olimar's grab...he grabs anyway...only difference is he is facing backwards. However, I have broken out by downsmashing...I don't know much about it but I'll look into it more

4) Red pikmin are his best defense against Mario considering fireballs don't effect them neither does your Fsmash

5) Garbage recovery...I've killed Olimars at 30% damage

6) Olimar's grab is brutal...be careful with your approach...if he's shielding fake him out

7) Be careful about being on the edge
Jump from edge = Fsmash or Usmash
Roll from edge = Dsmash
Standard get up = Fsmash
Ledgehop = Fsmash
This might not be the case with most Olimars but my friend doesn't give 2 ****s about his pikmin...he Fsmashes them off the edge to make sure I don't get back...I've actually watched him take out a guy's stock pikmin-less
----
if I think of anything else I'll add them here

I lost to a recent tournament against an Olimar... I didn't know what to do <-- John.

At 0% though, I was able to land short hop double uairs into a forward smash, and then just edge guard from there... Through out the match, I just spammed fire balls... While on the ledge I would cape stall as well until the Olimar backs up and rearranged Pikmans, that was where I jumped in for the attack.. I lost though.. but these were my main strats.

Yeah, the problem isn't getting beat up by him. It's simply getting close enough to do anything. O___o However, caping his Pikmin seems to be a huge step in the right direction. Does that work for his smash attacks too, or only his side B?

it probbaly doesn't work for smash attacks since they are considered disjointed hitboxes...... like swords.. so cpaping wil not work and besides his fsmash has waaaaayyy more range than your cape and the dsmash would still hit it even if you did managa to cape it --

olimar is no fun for mario
