I would like to start off by saying this is my first post on this forum. So, I appologize if this isn't being posted in the ideal section.

I have a few problems when playing online against at least 50% of the people I play. I tend to do well against people who I can contain if that makes any sense, but I notice that once I shield against experienced players, I get zooloo'd because of it. I try to up smash out of the shield as well as sh and attack out and it usually fails.

Some of the other issues i have are missed z canels, movement, and techs. But, I know that they will improve with playing. I've only been playing online for a little over two months now and would really like to improve. I believe this game to be right up my ally in terms of the competitive aspect of it as I come from a competitive background from halo.

I'd just like some tips in general. Maybe something's missed in other threads to be specific I.e. a definitive way to dair to uair with mario(my fingers are either too slow or I'm failing on a biblical level).

I can try and post some vids tomorrow for some harsh criticism if needed. I'm by no means "good". I'm a competitive noob wanting to learn.

Teach me your ways almighty smash boards!

I mean shielding is gonna get punished pretty hard. In this game, "don't get hit" applies to shields as well.

Dair to Uair is super duper hard, training mode grind and you'll eventually get it.

Uh other than that just play good people and have fun and come back with any specific questions. I don't have that much general advice... watch youtube vids and really analyze why they did ****, to the extent that you can. That's something a lot of people don't do. Make an active effort to improve when you have the energy, otherwise have fun with the game while still trying to win/improve

Record with fraps or another screen capturing software, render with windows movie maker or Sony Vegas then upload to youtube.

what was your name on halo? it wasn't flamesword by any chance was it?
ah flameswoard! i know him and a few of the other top players but im not him. i was good enough to make top 32(semi pro bracket) once, but not good enough to hold top 8 like he has for YEARS. I still have Chig and Ryanoob on my list, but i dont play anymore. The game is ruined and too marketable now. They still play for obvious reason, but id much prefer a game that takes raw skill opposed to markatble plows to improve ones halo experince(jet packs, etc.)

You kicked the crap out of me the other day. i enjoyed playing man. i hope to get to run some games with you again sometime. Ive somewhat fixed my issue with how often i desynk. I can now play between 3-5 games without trouble. woo!

and ya we can play again sometime. just join when im on server or somethin

Bane thanks for yesterday! You really helped me understand this game more on a fundamental level. With much practice I think I can be where I want in this game. I just desperately need to combo more consistently and work on my spacing a lot against better players.

You're a beast man. Sending bro love vibes your way.

You guys over there in Europe know scenes don't just magically appear right? You gotta get people you know interested. I don't know how prevalent ssb was in Europe back in the day, but in America a lot of people played as kids so a lot of people who are now in their late teens/early 20's grew up on the game and aren't to hard to convince to at least play a few games.

Look at NA top 50 (for example) and tell me how many of them is a friend recruited by another player. I mean I have a few friends who would play occasionally because I showed them the game, but that's not the kind of scene I'd want. And I don't know anyone who's dedicated enough to play a stupid games hours a week in order to get good.

I don't know specifics about everyone, but I know that I was recruited. Wizzrobe was recruited. Kero and SkyFire seem to have formed a crew in NY/NJ. In my area me/nintendude are helping some melee players get good at 64. Jimmy Joe has brought his friend Tony to pretty much every tournament he goes to. A number of different people played a part in recruiting Vice.

As far as top 50 players, I couldn't tell you because most of them started playing before me so I don't know how they started. I'd wager that most players started on console with a group of friends. Then they get too good for their own and seek greater competition. Its certainly harder if you only start online with no one irl to play with. I just do my part by promoting ssb wherever I go, playing anyone I can, and occasionally some of them are actually interested in learning more. All you can really do is show them how to play well, tell them to go online, show them videos, and hope they go for it. They might even just show another person videos sometime, and then THAT person is the one that starts playing. I'd love to see Europe get a decent sized scene, but its up to you guys to make it happen.

Kero wasn't recruited as far as I know. He came here saying he was the best (and he couldn't use mediafire).

I see what you mean and it could work if everyone recruited a few people. But I don't think anybody in Europe is really into the game anymore (most of them only play it from time to time) and nobody will bother trying to get more players. I do try to tell about our skype/msn groups to every random I run accross on kaillera (maybe 2 a year). I'd love even more to see a decent scene in Europe, but I'm not sure it's up to us to have one. NA seems to have much more people interested in the game to begin with (look at how many randoms you can find on servers, compared to the 2/year I see in Europe).

I meant that kero recruited more people to play with him like stranded, maliki, etc.

Yea it is definitely tough if you don't have anything to start with. I'd recommend telling people in real life about it. Most people are very surprised to find out you can play ssb online, sometimes it sparks their interest.

I have a few friends who play thanks to me. One of them just picked up the game and can't even upb yet, but he's already looked up all the nair/dtilt/fsmash/tech... terminology. Just played with him once. Another one thinks he's so good (can beat me), but he's been unrusting for months, so I haven't even played him (I helped him buy an adapter, a controller and setting up the emu). I destroyed two other ones and they haven't played ever since (they thought they were good, etc.). Two other ones picked up the game on KB and we used to play on school's computers.

All this to say there are a few players whom I tried to show the game, but none of them will bring it to the next level. They are just playing with me if I'm asking for (depending on whom) and I don't think any of them will love the competitive aspect to the point of trying online and trying to improve. A lot of people think it's no fun without items for example.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack the thread, so I'll stop now with this discussion.

Nah a lot of people are kind of recruited or helped even if they'd played before

like Han and Rumbly and Meowmeow were certainly not recruited by me, but the fact that they had a competitive player to play against a number of times meant that they could more easily get into the scene. Not saying they wouldn't have otherwise, but the fact that some people like clubba go out of their way to introduce noobs (I've been slacking lately, only one new guy really trying to get good) or help newer-ish players means that the scene waxes healthy

Well thanks to getting my ass handed to me a few times I've started to improve a lot. Thanks for anyone tolerating my massie amount of noob friendly questions when we've played. Especially bane and wilde.

Also, is there an accepted controller setting in terms of the range and deadzone? I play with 85% range and 4% dead zone.

Me and a few italian guys are picking this game up again, we like the competitive side of it but its a shame the emu doesn't work that good and theres pretty much noone to play with in eu.

^If you ever want to join the online scene, tell me your skype so I can add you to the Euro group. It's easier to find players that way, since we mostly p2p. The emu works alright, the biggest problem is kaillera. But we can get decent games if you're alone on your internet connection.

Will do for sure once we get a bit decent haha, still playing with keyboards, planning on picking some adapters soon though :)
