I've played just over 1000 1v1 matches in For Glory, and the one thing I did that improved my abilities more than any other is to STOP caring about the Win/Loss Ratio.

At about 500 matches my W/L was sitting at about 85%. But those stats were padded. I quit when i lost too much, and played every match against worse players. Sure my W/L was going up, but if anything my skills were going down.

After this point i decided i want to get better, not just look better. Everytime i run into a very good player, i play them again and again until they leave the match first. Sure it drops my W/L ratio, but these are the only matches which were making me better. Avoiding these matches would mean i'm never going to grow as a player. Also i would play through matches with a ridiculous amount of lag, just to get that precious Win. Now i run into 4 types of matches:
Matches where I'm better than the opponent i use to train my secondaries and practice advanced techniques in game
Matches where we are even i'll play just to try and learn the opponent
Matches where i'm much worse I will play just to take notes how the opponent was able to beat me
Matches with way too much lag I will SD and drop the game

Now my W/L sits at around 74%. But i'm a much better player than i was when it was at 85%. In tournaments you should be playing to win, in For Glory you should be playing to train.

This is a good post.

W/L is arbitrary in FG for multiple reasons, most of which OP has stated. Playing against people who are significantly worse than you is an effective waste of time. Leave those players and look for people who are at your level/better than you. Definitely the best way to improve.

I am just the opposite. I can't beat anyone more than two or three times before they leave, but there have been dozens of instance where I lost 10+ games against the opponent. Playing against players that I could easily win against made me develop bad habits. Playing against players that could beat me pretty easily made me stop doing things that don't work, and made me analyze the situation as to why I was losing.

I could learn more from 10 losses in a row than 100 wins in a row. This is why I am currently sitting at 54% and 1000 games.

Great thread. I feel like more people should do this. All I ever see is people who brag about their win/loss ratio, but then I ask them if they've stayed in matches where the opponent is superior in skill to them. The answer is almost always no. All everyone does is just stay in matches where they beat the opponent but leave against opponents who they can't win against, so I know their win/loss record isn't accurate.

I pretty much have to out of necessity.

For the first month online I was convinced I was gonna play DK because he's my favourite Nintendo character. One month later at 24% W/L I finally got fed up with the sort of people who play For Glory and the Final Destination only crap and just started playing Fox and have now dragged it up to 49%. At this point to ever have any good number I'm gonna have to go on w instreak of hundreds of games against the top tierers since those are the only players left.

Go back and give dk another try. Seriously.

I was god awful at this game adjusting to it too in the first month (skipped out on that pos you call brawl)

If you still dont mesh well with dk after a serious effort then whatever, sometimes you cant play your favourite aesthetically pleasing character if the results aren't there. But tier lists be damned dk has potetional - everyone does in this game it is the most balanced roster in the series imo.

I just hate to hear when people pick top tier players only because they are considered top tier and are quick to drop personal favourites. your individual skill and mental prowess trump any characters premature and inaccurate categorization.

EDIT: Watch Dk beat a *gasp* diddy?! in this best of 3 match that maybe sparks some assurance and inspiration (gasp is sarcastic as I don't beleive diddy is "OP")

If more people stop caring about there record and just play to get better and improve instead of farming wins off lesser skilled players and changing there tag to "noskill" or "ubad" whenever they go up against and skilled player, online would be a lot more enjoyable but one can only wish.

Nice post btw.

I haven't given a damn since I started. My record sucks because I only stick around for people that either match my current skill or can eat me. If they don't leave first. Also I SD deliberately when lag is bad, so, yeah.

Yeah I've been playing him some recently because I've gotten fed up with the tediousness of plaiyng Fox 24/7 and I've actually come to at least sort of understand how NuSmash works, and actually have been beating characters like Sheik and Ness who I couldn't touch when i first started, although that's mostly because For Glory at this point is 90% Sheik and Ness with some Zero Suit Samus thrown in on the side.

Unfortunately, DKWill is just leagues better than me and also doesn't have to play every damned match on Final "The Juggle Dome" Destination. But what the Hell, I set my tag to "DKCrew" and play him anyway because KongBro. Wanted to play Diddy too but I always lose as Diddy, I can't figure out how to play him.

I have never looked at my W/L ratio. It's not worth it.

Leaving those players doesn't help them get better! You should train against better players and help the newer/worse players so they can hold their own.

This is a good post, but you have to remember alot of decent/good players leave after 1/2 matches, For glory is indeed for training but when people are too scared of being beat, or their own ratio it becomes extremely hard to learn and improve

Then you doing the same to people, but not cause you worry about ratio, but you wanna get better, its a endless loop for all different reasons

Great advice - an inflated ratio means nothing.

I try to give everyone at least 2-3 matches, regardless of their level of skill (and barring awful lag), but will usually play for extended periods with people who are either a) much better than me and I could benefit from battling or b) much worse and I might be able to teach in some small way.

I've lost too many matches due to lag... that I stopped caring about it. I kinda feel bad for those that do. I've played hundreds of matches and I have a lot of wins, but also fair share of losses. Since it's not accessible by the public (outside of spectate), it does not matter to me.

Actually I have VERY FEW (at least like 2-3 times) times being beaten consistently by the same person over and over, and this is mainly them using one person.
Twice it was DDD and one time it was ROB
yea I was pissed at how much trouble I had at going against them, especially the rob with his rediculously precise timing for his projectiles
And my extremely bad habit of getting hit with Gordon throw many times.
I will admit......... I got salty saying I hated them, but I still fought many times
At least like 10 or more for that ROB player, beating him very few times.

if for glory had a ranking system and proper matchmaking wr would matter but since nintendo is essentially the amish when it comes to online integration that's never going to happen

Meh...last I checked, my win ration was at like 60%. I didn't bother looking at my records in my most recent For Glory rounds and I'm not gonna bother looking at those again. I play this just to have fun.

Most of the time, the person who you end up having a neck and neck match, or just beats you ends up leaving in just one win.

That infuriates me. Due to the fact that I can't have many fun matches, Because the player just leaves after ONE win.

My Win Ratio is only about 49%. I play with everyone for as long as they are willing to play, irrespective of whether I win or lose.
