This is actually less of a hypothetical question and more of a controller problem...
I use the Wii remote + Nunchuck controller, and as you probably know, it doesn't have a c-stick. However, I can change the D-pad to smash attacks, which feels like a good substitute. But once I do that, I don't have a grab button, which makes Z-dropping gyros/etc. a lot harder.
This means I have to replace one of the D-pad arrows to grab (since the 1 and 2 buttons are too far down) which makes another problem -- I lose a C-stick direction.
Is there any way to get around this? If they allowed you to use the minus key, it'd be a lot easier.
I might be able to buy one of those fight pad things, but for now...
