Are you vulnerable right at the ledge no matter what? Sometimes my friends throw out a forward smash and it seems like I get blasted before my character ever actually moves. Even if I push R to do the roll up, they clobber me off the edge before my character ever gets to the rolling animation.

Really depends on the character, get up attack and roll usually aren't the greatest options, try ledgedashing or coming onto stage with an aerial.

Also remember most characters have some good invincible ledgehop/ledgedash options which are not affected by percent.

Roll can be a decent mixup nowadays when used sparingly since so many people use ledgehop/ledgedash options.

there are vulnerability frames for normal get up options. the amount varies with character; some are really bad like marth's get up attack, and some are acceptable like mewtwo's normal get up.

Most characters don't have this though, which is why Ace and I were telling him to use different options.

I appreciate the suggestions for using other options, but learning the fine details of how these situations play out is much more important to me than perfecting the invincible ledge dash. More importantly, understand this will lead to better punishes when my opponents make the mistake. Even in high profile matches, people still accidentally do a slow get up from time to time and their opponent kills them for it.

I have played around in 20xx with the hitbox mode on to experiment from time to time, but I still get confused when I watch people get hit while doing a slow get up sometimes. It makes more sense now that people are explaining that everyone's vulnerability frames are different.

Well you presented a scenario where you're getting punished for rolling from the ledge. It's very punishable and you've been getting punished for using it. Someone at some point will recommend using other options.
