How would you react? A 3D movie based on Subspace Emssary that is. Using the same artstyle as Rosalina's trailer and Brawl only characters. Though changing a few things here and there.

Creating a movie based on Subspace Emissary with only Brawl characters doesn't seem like a good use of time considering the new characters in the roster and the story not being fresh and exciting. However, I would love to see a Smash movie with a new story and all of the new characters.

All of this is considering the story could be made decent at least.

Ehhh, if it was Sakurai directing I don't think I'd be too excited about it. Reason being, even though he's a great developer he doesn't seem to be much of a storyteller himself. Kirby games, and the SSE, usually are simplistic. Not that simplistic styles are bad, mind, but I just don't think Sakurai's style is suited to delivering on the true heroic nature of these characters.
Then again, I think a lot of modern writers can't deliver true heroics on the scale of the legends and noble saints of old.
Actually, now that I think about it more, Sakurai's simplistic style might be very well suited for getting all the gunk out of the way and delivering a concise story of true heroics.
Also EHHHHHH MY MARTH x ZELDA SHIPPING MIGHT BE ENDANGERED BY THE MOVIE CANON. The one thing I have going for me is that Smash doesn't really have a 'canon' story line. It's one of the reasons so many people are drawn to writing fanfiction for it.
Edit: reading the op, I realize said movie would have SSE storyline.
EHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
The only real interaction and character we see is the Lucas/PKMN Trainer arc. And MAYBE the Kong/Star Fox arc. Everyone else is BLAND. I don't like the SSE story line.

A movie wouldn't be a very good medium for it, but they could try episodic videos like what Pikmin is getting. That'd be cute :>

I think what we really need is that Smash Bros. anime we've been wanting since summer

Well, I think Nintendo should go into movies, but different franchises would likely be distributed by different studios (we all know Columbia would be ineligible to distribute any Nintendo adaptations because of who they're owned by). So I don't know how a Smash movie would work if different characters are tied to different studios.

This is Nintendo. Not Pixar.
This is Super Smash Bros. Not Wall E.
Wall E was able to tell a really good story through expressive actions, character development, and meticulous detail.
There is a certain freedom in making all new characters that you can use to make a story really good.
Now, contrast that with Smash Bros. You do not possess that same freedom. Nintendo must be consistent with their characters' personalities or they risk their interpretation being alienated by fans.
This is just an example.
Short movies and trailers are fine because they merely need to capture key characteristics of a character without elaborating or developing further. It is enough to show Mario's tenacity, Bowser's viciousness and Peach's helplessness.
I'm not saying it's not possible to make a movie. But I am saying that given the current situation, it is extremely unlikely such an idea will work.

Dark Pit would probably play a significant role. And Chrom would probably be forgotten about. Again.

If they could pull it off, like what they did with the Pikmin Short Films, then we'd be in for a treat

I've wanted Nintendo to get into licensing out Mario, Smash Bros or whatever else for an animated series for some time now. I thought the DIC Mario shows had charm, so I'd love some of that charm again.

According to Wikipedia, Sakurai himself has some Scenario Writing credit for both Brawl and KI: Uprising and although I don't know how good Ki: Uprising is, SSE's story-telling wasn't that intruging outside the fact that the different characters interacted with each-other. Not to dismiss that aspect entirely, and not to say there was no impact story-wise (inside the spoiler below is a cool moment from SSE).

D3, Luigi and Lucas waking up and forming a trio

Maybe you'd could make it a couple of CG low-impact shorts like the Pikmin Shorts, which were cute! Maybe you could reach out to popular flash / CG animators online for some PR!

Someone who has no experience with movies, making a game based off a storyline that nobody liked. Sounds like something i'd watch with a pack of beer and have a good laugh.

I'm open to the idea, but I doubt Sakurai would do it justice. He's a game director, not a story teller.

He can make the trailers though. They werr great. :p

You guys do realise that Sakurai is a writer, right? Even says it on his portfolio.

Sakurai wrote the entirety of the original Japanese dialogue in Kid Icarus: Uprising.

He also personally set up the studio for the Kirby anime (which ended with a movie).

Heck yeah he can make a movie. I'd love if his next project was a Smash CGI movie/anime series.

This is a horrible idea. Not just for a movie but also a thread topic.

I want a story-heavy game from him now! Not just Smash, anything would be cool.

Aha, I wasn't aware of these things! I should've looked closer. He probably has the chops to write for a shorts / movie project. I'd just presume he wouldn't direction nuthin'.

Speaking of, one of the goals of SSE was to not include any dialogue outside character grunts, which was rather dispointing. Like, they had Solid Snake as a character! I'd throw out all the taunt Codec calls and put the VO time for actual Codec calls during SSE, if I could rewrite history like that.

My point being, I'd love characters that presumably talk to do so and have verbal interactions.

The problem with actually having dialogue in SSE is that I'd be really one-sided.
One of the primary characters would be Link, who could never talk. In fact, the vast majority of Nintendo's main characters hardly talk.
The only times Samus and Link talk are in the worst entries of their series (Other M, CDI) Mario and Kirby only speak a word at a time, etc.

It'd be 45% Kirby, 45% Kid Icarus, and 10% everything else. :awesome:
Nah im sure every character would get a cameo but Kid Icarus and Kirby characters would get that "Sakurais character does something important" cliche.

Or they could just make a smash bros story mode and avoid the embarressment a movie would bring. Has any video game brought to film ever been good?

Not to mention the storyline just wouldn't work. The only way it wouldn't be a complete embarressment is if they use short scenes that fit the characters' limited personalities, but then it would be a terrible movie. A story mode for a video game would be the only way this would ever work.

Sonic The Movie

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva

Kirby: Fright to the Finish

Phoenix Wright Live Action Movie (the actors of the main characters here went on to become the Japanese voice actors in future PW games)

Prince of Persia movie

Just a few off the top of my head.

Super Mario Bros. and Double Dragon the movie are both so bad they're good.

Same for Street Fighter the movie.

The first Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, and Resident Evil movies are legitimately good.

And does Wreck it Ralph count?

Sonic and Kirby both had successful TV shows before the movie, Prince of Persia wasn't that good, and the other two don't have 30 something different equally important characters all with limited and non changeable personalities.

Yes, I was exaggerating when I asked if any video game movie ever has been good, but the point is they usually aren't that good, and the ones you listed already had well recieved storylines. A smash bros movie would have to find a storyline, because SSE isn't much of a story, and hope people like it, and it has to fit over 30 different protagonists different personalities without changing them at all so fans don't get mad. Some of these characters have been around for so long, that any change would be alienated by fans which would reflect horribly on the movie. Imagine if Link started talking. It wouldn't be Link. While it's easy to keep 2 or 3 characters personalities constant, imagine over 30, that are all being forced together to fit a made up storyline. It would just be very very risky and wouldn't be worth jeopardizing the whole series' image for.

People would get angry if their favorite characters didn't have a major role. Example:

"Damn Sakurai! Why did he put Ridley in the movie with a non-speaking cameo? He should have been one of the main villains!"

What have successful TV shows got to do with a movie's quality? The Sonic Movie in particular was Japanese made, and had nothing to do with the Western cartoons.

Also no series has 30 something equally important characters. So that's not relevant.

Link could have a fairy to speak for him like in Hyrule Warriors, if he really can't talk.

A successful TV show means that the franchise is already popular on the TV market. The Kirby movie was the last episode of a popular TV series. Obviously if the TV series is good, the movie of that TV series has a good chance of being good too. I did not know that the Sonic movie wasn't from the TV series, but based on reviews I've found, it wasn't exactly great or popular either. Decent.

And yes, Smash Bros, the series we are talking about a movie being made of here, has 30 something equally important characters (based on Brawl that is, 50 if the movie is of Sm4sh), so that is relevant.
