After thinking about it for a while, I figured it would be a good idea if there was a custom equipment shop (assuming Nintendo listens to us and makes it an update or DLC, which is very unlikely). Not only would it make getting desired equipment MUCH easier (as well as be a good reason to sell useless equipment), but it would make standardizing equipment possible as the RNG is taken out of the picture, allowing multiple consoles to support the exact same customs.
As such, I figured out a potential system for the shop:
For special moves, each custom special move will cost 100G. To get all 384 unlockable custom moves (including Mewtwo's whenever he comes out), that will be 38,400G. Considering how long it takes to get custom moves anyway, that feels fair (at least to me).

Now for the more interesting part: equipment. Here's one setup that might work:
  • You start by choosing Brawn, Defense, or Agility. Custom equipments will be compatible with all characters.
  • The buff can not go above +80 or below +0.
  • The nerf can not go above -0 or below -80.
And the math involved:
  • Each piece of equipment starts with a base price of 100G.
  • For every point added to the buff stat, +10G to the price.
  • Take the sum of the buff and the nerf, multiply by 5, and add to the price.
  • A common positive effect +30G, a rare positive effect +70G, a negative effect -20G.
  • The total price can never drop below 15G.
Here's an example - +50/-20 Air Attacker Brawn Badge:
  • 100 Base Price
  • 100 + 10*(+50) = 100 + 500 = 600
  • 600 + 5*(50-20) = 600 + 5*(30) = 600 + 150 = 750
  • 750 + (Air Attacker +30) = 780
  • 780 > 10, Final Price 780
TL;DR +50/-20 Air Attacker Brawn Badge costs 780G.
Compare to a +50/-60 Auto Healer Speed Badge: 560G.
Or to a +30/-4 Defense Badge: 490G.
While I'm pretty sure it isn't going to happen, I'll have an open poll anyway to see if people would appreciate the addition of this feature.

I mean sure, it would help for unlocking.. but unless you work for the update team for smash, i doesn't really matter. You'd have a better chance getting this idea into fruition by sending nintendo an e-mail.

I'll do something like that after some time has passed. I just want to see what happens with the poll for a while.

EDIT: Just sent a long email to Nintendo of America, asking to direct it to the dev team. *crosses fingers*

Yes, and I am baffled that it wasn't put in the game at launch. Kid Icarus: Uprising had a similar thing for weapons, which are what equipment in Smash take inspiration from.

There really isn't enough use for Gold in this game in general.

I'd like this, considering I have enough Gold to buy all the Customs that I still need.

And then if this was on 3DS, I'd be able to buy two sets of each custom. There really needs to be more uses for gold.

It would seem good if you're able to purchase custom specials and Mii headgear, but you'd still have the luck factor to deal with. In terms of prices for the equipment, I did have the following in mind...

Common | Uncommon | Rare
10 * (stat boost/stat drop) | 50 * (stat boost/stat drop) | 100 * (stat boost/stat drop)
If the results are a decimal, the price will be rounded to the nearest integer.

For some examples of how the system would work...

  • Common
    • Agility Badge (+21 Speed, -14 Attack): 10 * (21/14) = 15G
    • Discount Pumps (+30 Speed, -18 Attack): 10 * (30/18) = 17G
    • Enchanted Dress (+30 Defense, -19 Speed): 10 * (30/19) = 16G
  • Uncommon
    • Super Agility Badge (+43 Speed, -28 Attack): 50 * (43/28) = 77G
    • Expensive Pumps (+60 Speed, -38 Attack): 50 * (60/38) = 79G
    • High-Quality Dress (+60 Defense, -42 Speed): 50 * (60/42) = 71G
  • Rare
    • Rare Agility Badge (+56 Speed, -31 Attack): 100 * (56/31) = 181G
    • Designer Pumps (+79 Speed, -47 Attack): 100 * (79/47) = 168G
    • Exquisite Dress (+85 Defense, -56 Speed): 100 * (85/56) = 152G
For equipment that has bonus effects, however, the formula would be as follows...

Equipment with Bonus Effects
500 * (stat drop/stat boost)
For some examples...
  • Critical Hitter Brawn Badge (+7 Attack, -40 Defense): 500 * (40/7) = 2857G
  • Crash Lander Brawn Badge (+43 Attack, -4 Defense): 500 * (4/43) = 47G
  • Hard Braker Pumps (+59 Speed, -37 Attack): 500 * (37/59) = 314G
  • Mr. Saturn Dress (+25 Defense, -17 Speed): 500 * (17/25) = 340G
  • Lo-Jump Pumps (+72 Speed, -11 Attack): 500 * (11/72) = 76G
  • Safe Respawner Pumps (+17 Speed, -27 Attack): 500 * (27/17) = 794G
  • Risky Respawner Pumps (+79 Speed, -22 Attack): 500 * (22/79) = 139G
  • Perfect-Shield Helper Pumps (+15 Speed, -30 Attack): 500 * (30/15) = 1000G
Because equipment with negative bonus effects tend to have much stronger stat boosts, they'll often be much less expensive to buy. Whereas, equipment with positive bonus effects are typically more expensive, and the price is higher if their stat drop is greater than their stat boost.

Edit: Changed the formulas to be less expensive.

You could even take this further, if a Equipment affects more characters, (Mushroom, Banana, ect) it could be worth more depending on how many characters it can be used for. The Generic "Badge" equipment a could be worth more than say, Loid, since you can use it for the whole cast instead of Villager.

It would be SUPER helpful to the community as a whole. We might even see equipment in competitive tournaments this way.

I want Custom Move shop before Equipment shop.

Equipment is just ew.
I agree. Buying custom moves would be SO helpful.

For buying custom moves, I was thinking that you could pick the move, or at least the character, that you wanted to buy the move for, reducing the RNG's effect. Ditto with the hats (and to a lesser extent, the outfits).

I really like your formula for the equipments; it's definitely much simpler than mine.

You could even take this further, if a Equipment affects more characters, (Mushroom, Banana, ect) it could be worth more depending on how many characters it can be used for. Very true. I never really thought of that possibility.

Haven't received a reply from NoA yet, so I'm still holding out hope. Here's a copy of the email I sent:
This is to be directed to the development/update team for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS & Wii U.
I have a feature request for a future update or DLC - a custom equipment shop. Currently, selling equipment doesn't really have a lot of use, for it doesn't net players that much gold, and the ways to spend gold aren't terribly spectacular so far. To make up for this, the ability to buy equipment should be implemented.
However, buying equipment should NOT be randomized. Players should have full control over the equipment they buy, including stat modifiers and bonus effects, with only the price being determined by the game. At the end of this e-mail, I have posted a sample algorithm for calculating a price based on the type of equipment purchased. Feel free to use or modify it, so long as there is no randomness involved.
The reason this would be a useful feature is to make character customization much easier, as having fully customized equipment would allow others to set the stats however they wanted within certain bounds. While this would make the randomized equipment earned from the various singleplayer modes somewhat pointless, it would also give players a reason to sell their old equipment: to get enough gold to buy a better piece of equipment that they wanted for their custom character or figure player.
While on the subject of purchasing equipment, custom special moves should also be purchasable, so as to make those options available sooner for players who want to get into character customization. The only exceptions (if there are any) would be the special moves unlocked from completing challenges, as none of the challenges involved are too difficult as to be frustrating.
Please reply if you will consider implementing this addition to the game, and thank you for your time and consideration.

P.S. Sample Equipment Price Algorithm:
Custom Special Moves: 100G per item.

Purchasing Equipment:
  • Player first decides on Brawn, Agility, or Speed Badge.
  • All purchased equipment is compatible with all characters.
  • Stat improvement (buff) ranges between +0 and +80
  • Stat reduction (nerf) ranges between -0 and -80
  • Base equipment price: 100G.
  • Common Positive Effect: +30G
  • Rare Positive Effect: +70G
  • Negative Effect: -20G
  • +10G per point in buff
  • Subtract nerf from buff, multiply by 5G, and add to price
    • For example, if stats were +50/-35, take 50-35=15, x5G = +75G
  • Minimum equipment price: 15G.
An example: +60/-23 Hasty Edge Sword: 865G
  • 100G Base
  • 100 + (Hasty Edge -20) = 80G
  • 80 + 10*(+60 buff) = 80 + 600 = 680G
  • 680 + 5*(+60 buff -23 nerf) = 680 + 5*37 = 680 + 185 = 865G
  • 865 > 15, Final Price 865G

Lying about my country.
Honestly, I think having that much control over the buyable equipment would actually end up hurting the game in the long run.

If you can just make the exact equipment you want down to the exact stat and extra ability with no real limitations, the random equipment is now 100% obsolete and is useless to absolutely every player interested on collecting and using equipment.

I'd say something like the trophy shop would work better. You get a small list of equipments, can get any one that you like (or none if you don't like any of the listed ones) and then would have to wait a while until the list updates itself if you want to get something else.

The game is already built around random equipment drops. Having complete control would be a huge change to the entire dynamics of equipment.

To put an example, think of a game like Diablo. Having the ability to create your own weapons and armor with the exact stats you want would pretty much destroy the entire appeal of exploring the world to find loot. Why bother exploring when you can just make up the rewards yourself and just skip the challenge?

The same would apply to Smash equipment. If you can make up your own equipment, equipment rewards lose all value, they just end up becoming an annoyance.

I think the way that an equipment shop would work is that you're given up to 16 different pieces of equipment to purchase, and you're way more likely to come across common equipment than equipment that's less common to see. You might also come across equipment that has a bonus effect, but such equipment may be more expensive to purchase.

Now, here's a twist that I never mentioned with my pricing system the other day. An extra multiplier would be applied, based on how many characters can use the equipment. There are 51 fighters total, so how expensive the equipment will be is dependent on how many fighters can use it. So the formulas would end up being...

Common | Uncommon | Rare
(10 * (stat boost/stat drop)) * (51/no. of compatible characters) | (50 * (stat boost/stat drop)) * (51/no. of compatible characters) | (100 * (stat boost/stat drop)) * (51/no. of compatible characters)
As such, I'll give out some formula examples...
  • Brawn Badge (+21 Attack, -14 Defense)
    • (10 * (21/14)) * (51/51) = 15G
  • Standard Arm Cannon (+30 Attack, -18 Defense)
    • (10 * (30/18)) * (51/3) = 283G
  • Stylish Boots (+60 Speed, -38 Attack)
    • (50 * (60/38)) * (51/15) = 268G
  • High-Performance Watch Battery (+60 Defense, -38 Speed)
    • (50 * (60/38)) * (51/1) = 4026G
  • Holy Staff (+85 Attack, -56 Defense)
    • (100 * (85/56)) * (51/2) = 3871G
  • Rare Brawn Badge (+60 Attack, -33 Defense)
    • (100 * (60/33)) * (51/51) = 182G
As you can see, the Badges are the cheapest to purchase. However, the Watch Battery is very expensive, since only Mr. Game & Watch can use it. Interestingly, the Boots equipment is used by a decent number of characters, so they're among the cheapest non-Badge equipment that can be purchased.

As for the equipment that has bonus effects...

Equipment with Bonus Effects
(500 * (stat drop/stat boost)) * (51/no. of compatible characters)
For some examples...
  • Crash Lander Brawn Badge (+43 Attack, -4 Defense)
    • (500 * (4/43)) * (51/51) = 47G
  • Food Lover Boots (+19 Speed, -20 Attack)
    • (500 * (20/19)) * (51/15) = 1789G
  • Glider Feather (+26 Speed, -35 Attack)
    • (500 * (35/26)) * (51/1) = 34327G
  • Lo-Jump Pumps (+72 Speed, -11 Attack)
    • (500 * (11/72)) * (51/2) = 1948G
  • Smash Ball Attractor Brawn Badge (+11 Attack, -15 Defense)
    • (500 * (15/11)) * (51/51) = 682G
As usual, the price for the equipment is determined by how many characters can use it. Since only Duck Hunt can use Feather equipment, you'll need a VERY large amount of gold if the equipment's bonus effect is quite powerful.

Yeah it can be a problem for the equipment that only one fighter can use. For example, only Robin can use the Tome equipment, so Tomes would be much more costly to purchase than the Coats and Boots equipment.

Sometimes you'll just have to ask yourself if you're better off getting the Agility Badge, Brawn Badge, or Protection Badge for such characters, as they'll be the cheapest equipment to buy.

For an example, if you're choosing between the First Striker Brawn Badge and the First Striker Tome, the former will be a lot cheaper to buy, since everyone can use it. Whereas, the latter would be very expensive, since only Robin can use it.

Of course, badges usually don't boost (and hinder) stats as much as the character-specific equipment, since I've seen a Rare Brawn Badge offer the same attack boost as a Purifying Staff (up to +60 from what I've seen), while the Holy Staff's attack boost can be as high as +85 (a value that you'll never get with any badges).

Now, in terms of the price multiplier, the following table can probably give you an idea on which equipment sub-types will cost more than others.

Equipment | Multiplier
| 51/51
| 51/15
| 51/10
| 51/8
| 51/6
| 51/5
| 51/4
| 51/3
| 51/2
| 51/1

Am I the only one that swears remembering hearing something about an Equipment/Custom Move shop that you can spend gold on during the 50 Fact Extraganza or around that time? I remember seeing it in passing and thinking "Good, that was pretty grindy in 3DS, I'm glad they adjusted that for the Wii U version." And it turns out we got something WORSE than the 3DS version in that regard.

This would help immensely. I have about 300,000G in the 3DS version that I have nothing to spend on (the Trophy Shop is useless right now, because I have almost all 685 trophies already).

I can't believe I forgot to mention about discount prices. Much like how trophies may have discounts, so would the custom parts. The discounts can range from 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. However, on very rare occasions, you might get a 90% discount for the custom part.

Now, let's say that it costs 500G to purchase a custom special. If there's a 20% discount, then the price will get reduced to 400G.

This would even apply to equipment, where equipment that's super expensive may cost less if they're on sale. For some examples...
  • Brawn Badge (+21 Attack, -14 Defense) - 30% discount
    • ((10 * (21/14)) * (51/51)) * 0.7 = 11G
  • Stylish Boots (+60 Speed, -38 Attack) - 40% discount
    • ((50 * (60/38)) * (51/15)) * 0.6 = 161G
  • Holy Staff (+85 Attack, -56 Defense) - 50% discount
    • ((100 * (85/56)) * (51/2)) * 0.5 = 1935G
  • Glider Feather (+26 Speed, -35 Attack) - 90% discount
    • ((500 * (35/26)) * (51/1)) * 0.1 = 3433G

Don't know why I didn't think of this before, but another useful feature would be to trade equipment between systems (between a Wii U & 3DS, or between friends' systems).
