It just came to my mind literally just now...
The Ice Climbers were removed due to the 3DS's graphical limitations, if I recall. Unless there were other reasons I didn't see. But just focusing on the graphical limitations, a thought came to my mind that I wanted to share.
Pokémon and Assist Trophy characters run at 30FPS while playable fighters run at 60FPS. It's very much possible to have 8 characters on the 3DS at a time since you can have 3 Pokémon and 1 Assist character in play during a 4-player Smash. Four 60FPS characters and four 30FPS characters.
In a 4-player Smash of all Rosalina & Luma, you have four 60FPS characters (Rosalina) and 4 half-size/miniature 60FPS characters (Luma) as well as four 30FPS characters (Pokémon and Assist), resulting in 12 characters on screen.
In a 4-player Smash with all Olimar and/or Alph, you have the four of them as well as up to 12 Pikmin (which I could consider as half-size/miniature) running at 30FPS and still the four other FPS, making a (sort of) 20 characters on screen at the same time.... sort of.
I know that could and probably does strain the 3DS's capabilities since I've never actually tried testing those experiments myself, but... is there any reason why the AI controlled Ice Climber couldn't just play at 30FPS while the controlled Ice Climber plays at 60? I suppose it could easy push the 3DS's limits since none of the above experiments actually involve 12 full-size characters on screen at the same time, but... I just wonder if Sakurai and his team tried experimenting with that themselves? Does anyone think it could have possibly worked out if the AI Ice Climber ran at 30FPS?
