It just came to my mind literally just now...
The Ice Climbers were removed due to the 3DS's graphical limitations, if I recall. Unless there were other reasons I didn't see. But just focusing on the graphical limitations, a thought came to my mind that I wanted to share.
Pokémon and Assist Trophy characters run at 30FPS while playable fighters run at 60FPS. It's very much possible to have 8 characters on the 3DS at a time since you can have 3 Pokémon and 1 Assist character in play during a 4-player Smash. Four 60FPS characters and four 30FPS characters.

In a 4-player Smash of all Rosalina & Luma, you have four 60FPS characters (Rosalina) and 4 half-size/miniature 60FPS characters (Luma) as well as four 30FPS characters (Pokémon and Assist), resulting in 12 characters on screen.

In a 4-player Smash with all Olimar and/or Alph, you have the four of them as well as up to 12 Pikmin (which I could consider as half-size/miniature) running at 30FPS and still the four other FPS, making a (sort of) 20 characters on screen at the same time.... sort of.

I know that could and probably does strain the 3DS's capabilities since I've never actually tried testing those experiments myself, but... is there any reason why the AI controlled Ice Climber couldn't just play at 30FPS while the controlled Ice Climber plays at 60? I suppose it could easy push the 3DS's limits since none of the above experiments actually involve 12 full-size characters on screen at the same time, but... I just wonder if Sakurai and his team tried experimenting with that themselves? Does anyone think it could have possibly worked out if the AI Ice Climber ran at 30FPS?

Luma, I'd say, is slightly smaller than the Ice Climbers. I see where you're coming from; but I honestly like R&L better.

I'd definitely never want to replace Rosalina, she's such a good character. I'd just been thinking about the 3DS's limitations and then some experiments came to mind. Since Rosalina & Luma are sorta kinda maybe a little not really similar to the concept of the Ice Climbers, they seemed like a good candidate for testing graphical capabilities.

I don't get it though still, why remove Ice Climbers when you have 2 2-in-1 chacters anyway? I don't mind Rosalina and Luma, but Duck Hunt??? I know Niintendo is trying to bring NES characters as playable characters in here, (ROB, Marth, and Duck hunt are NES characters that don't have a game of further consoles... Idk for marth) But WHY Duck Hunt?!?! Sure those trio of a character are good, but I want the Ice Climbers back as my melee childhood memory for ssb.

I'm no technical expert, but I think that Duck Hunt works out because the Duck and Dog are technically one entity and only detach for certain moves. Luma works because it's animations are very simple and it does not have as many moves as Rosalina (similar situation with Olimar and Pikmin). @ MeowsticMix MeowsticMix If Nana were to run at 30fps, the animations would not match up with the hitboxes and become confusing. Also, seeing as how the player controls both climbers at the same time, one running at 60fps and one at 30fps would be very hard to control (not to mention super ugly). Maybe the new 3ds will be able to run them, otherwise you go back to melee (or brawl/PM if that's your cup of tea).

It is not a graphical issue. It is a technical issue with the 3ds. The ice climbers are very complicated in the way they function since you don't technically have complete control over one of them, usually nana. Rosalina and luma are much more simple. They do the same thing every time you make button inputs. You have full control over what luma is doing. Luma is more of an extension. Nana is a complex partner in battle that you don't have full control over yet the two still make one character. It's a 3ds hardware limitation
