I want to get good at melee and attend tournaments but don't know if I should...

Heya. I've played smash bros for a good majority of my life, Starting with melee. But it wasn't until this year (SOMEHOW) that I learned about the competitive scene and how intense melee actually is. I very badly want to go to tournaments, but I don't know if it will be worth it. I need a few strong opinions and answers from some people who know about the smash scene for me to decide. I will put my conflicts below and I really would appreciate it if as many people as possible tell me what they think.

1. Smash bros melee is old, and I've missed so much already in the competitive scene. How much longer do you think this scene will exist? Would it even be worth starting up a smash melee career at this point?

2. I don't have a problem with driving long distances, as long as I can get the time off of work. But I live in Minnesota and after some research, I don't think there's very much of a smash scene around my area... like at all. So if I'm going to drive a distance, I want the tournaments that I go to, to be at least decent size. It would be a bummer to drive 8 hours only to get to a place with 20 or less people. I'd even be happy with 40.

3. With sm4sh being right around the corner, It might be possible that the melee scene will grow a little smaller due to everyone flocking to sm4sh. I just don't want to pick up a game, and then another game come and outshine the one I decided one. I know that melee will probably always be the most intense, but I want to go for the one that will last the longest, and have the biggest community.

I watched to Smash Documentry and other people's montages of traveling to tourneys and it was very inspiring. I want to travel, make friends, and over all just have a great time.

EDIT: I think this is the wrong forum section so I'm gonna post this in another place just in case :p

To post it here too:

Hi, I'm from Minnesota too.

1. Melee will last for at least 5 more years, if not more. SSB4 is not destroying melee like some feared, and Melee's just too good.
2. We have tons of tournaments in Minnesota, but where do you live? There are active scenes in: The cities, Duluth, Fargo/Moorhead, St. Cloud, Mankato, and there exists a single person in Fergus Falls who's worth playing. Rochester I have no clue.
3. No, as mentioned in point 1. In fact, Melee is only going to get bigger because more people are paying attention to Smash. Melee has grown a ton in the last 2 years, especially in Minnesota. When I hopped into the competitive scene here in May 2013, there were like 40 actual players (people who show up to events/fests), but now there's a couple hundred. Our facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/MNSmash/) has over 1100 members now, and we have like 12 tournaments every month (4ish each for Melee, P:M, and SSB4).

In fact, there's right now a tournament at the U of M that had over 100 pre-registered people and is playing singles and doubles for all 3 major games. 40 entrants for PM, 60-ish for melee, 10+ teams for each game, etc.

Here's the stream: http://www.twitch.tv/mnsmash Melee will start soon, it's currently Loser's Finals in P:M.
