I use tap jump, does that make me a bad player?

I know i'm not the worst player, but i'm used to jumping with up instead of buttons, that means i usually can't perform up tilts, does that mean i'll never be a good player competitively?

No, but it's a really bad habit. Its fine but up tilts are very useful on a large majority of characters. If you get used to just tilting the joystick up for tilts (which is extremely hard and inconsistent imo) then that's fine. Having tap jump on also means chances are a uair will take your your second jump, which can be problematic in situations. Only situation I can see it being useful on is for Up-b OoS.

It wasn't that problematic when i was using Rosalina, because she doesn't have the best u-tilt, but now i've kind of mained Marth, it became a real issue. He has a great u-tilt...

It's just what you are used to play with. If you can kick some serious ass with it then you should keep playing like that.

Up tilts are really important. Unless you are Gannon, then maybe it's good if you can't easily do his. That said, it is possible to consistently control whether you jump, tilt, or up smash just using the stick - it just takes a lot of practice. There are really great players out there that use the stick, although using a button to short hop is also useful.

I suggest you either practice until you can easily and consistently do an up tilt, or turn tap jump off and learn to use the buttons. Either way takes some effort, but improving your game always takes effort.

Try setting one (or both) of the L shoulder buttons to jump, so you cant still easily perform aerial tilts with the right stick while moving in any direction. Also, you are used to jumping with you left hand so it shouldn't be too hard to adapt.

Good luck and keep it up - you'll eventually get the hang of it.

I was really good when I used up, I noticed how it would help if I used the buttons and it did help.

It seems hard to get used to, but it isn't... Just try to use it as much as you can till you get used to it
