I Suck (At Playing Decent Players)

Don't get me wrong, I can keep my ground on For Glory and with casual-level players, and although my W/L ratio never suprasses 60% I have plenty of fun playing.
However, I find myself losing to people who have the minimum amount of grasp of what they're doing, and it starts getting frustrating after a while. I've honed some of my skills on recent weeks and learned how to short hop and keep up with some combos, but when I start getting frustrated I hardly remember to do that.

Case in point: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4LhV_QDj1pHMDVvZGZtM2lWTGc/view?usp=sharing

This guy beat me 4 times in a row with Luigi. I didn't know what was going on, I figured eventually I'd learn and punish his techniques, but I never did. My only KO against him was in that match, and it was sheer luck cause he wanted to show off a bit. I want to know what I need to get better at, re-watching I can pinpoint some instants where I should've done a NAir or something, but I'd like some different perspectives too.

You rolled a bit much and were kinda predictable with your approaches. You should probably try to vary them and watch out against Luigi, his throws combo like mad and his smashes are pretty strong. I think you just got kinda mind game'd in the match as well, so just try to think "what has he been doing and what can I do to stop it?"

Just practice and have fun; no matter if you win or lose! :)

You shouldn't take anything that happens on For Glory seriously. The lag is absolutely horrendous

First of all, welcome to Smashboards. We have a lot of resources you can utilize to get better at the game. I recommend going to the Ness Character Sub-forum. There are a lot of threads there that can help you out. For example, there's the Ness video and critique thread. You can post your video there and other Ness players will be able to comment on the video and help you out on how to improve. There's also the Ness Match-Up Thread. You can ask your specific match-up related questions there. Also, there's the Ness Social Thread, you can go introduce yourself there as a fellow Ness player! I hope all these links end up helping you out.

Not a Ness player, but I can help with some general tips.

I'm 1:15 in and seeing some issues. You roll behind him a lot, and he punishes with a Dsmash.
2:30, you roll right into a fsmash.
3:25, you roll into him again - he punishes.

Another trend I saw, you attempt to airdodge into the ground and jump above him - Luigi's Usmash comes out fast and is deadly.

This guy wasn't that great, but he was able to force you to approach. My tip for you would be to roll around less - especially close up...punish his over-use of rolls in close range by running past him and doing a dash attack/grab/PK fire.

*rolls 500 times a match*

"guys why do i suck?"
I found this to be rude and unnecessary. You're not helping the OP at all.

He has already gotten past the first stage of being good at something - realizing he isn't. Now he can only improve from here.

It sounds more rude than it is...I'm really just hammering home the idea that excessive rolling is bad

Like everyone else said too many rolls. Don't make rolling a bad habit or your primary form of moving use it to escape or to bring it back to neutral. Rolling is pretty punishable(less so online with lag) so don't make it a habit.

Just keep practicing and looking for help and you'll improve in no time!

When playing Ness, try using Up Air when landing. Up Air gives the least amount of landing lag. Air dodging into the ground is your absolute worst option, since air dodge always gives you horrendous landing lag.

Also, I noticed you had a habit of jumping and not attacking. Try to have an attack out whenever your opponent could be near you. Forward Air is good for this since it doesn't have much lag and its disjointed hitbox is held out for a while.

Never use PKT2 (the PK Thunder body slam) for no reason. You only want to try to catch your opponent with it when they are in lag frames from landing, from a bad smash attack, or a bad edgeguard attempt.

You should try to work on your PK Thunder control. You had the right idea of following up with it whenever Luigi was in the air. However, you should try to loop it around more. Try to follow your opponent's fall path with it. Remember that it is most important to protect your body from being hit, so always have the option to bring the PK Thunder into yourself. You can even PKT2 into
your opponent as they are landing!

You should try PK Fire pivoting so you can space better while using PK Fire. You basically input a run in one direction, then PK Fire in the other direction. This allows you to step back a little while using PK Fire.

Against characters with slow and predictable energy projectiles like Mario, Luigi, and Pikachu, you should try to PSI Magnet cancel whenever you can. If you absorb with Ness's Down B, you can input a roll backwards as soon as the absorb happens. This basically gives you free health.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the suggestions and critique, good or bad. I'll take a look around the Ness forum and keep all these things in mind, I'm also working on getting a better connection so at least the lag appears less frequently. See you around!
