I sometimes light shield instead of grabbing, is there a way around this?

Sometimes when I try to grab, I do a light shield instead, is there a way to always get a grab? And whilst I'm at it, sometimes it takes a second before I can use the c-stick for smashes, even though I shouldn't be in any kind of ending lag, anyone knows why?

What controller do you use? I have the same problem with wavebirds and messed up z buttons.

An official GC controller. The dead zone is set to 0, so there shouldn't be any, I don't recall having this problem on console, just on netplay.

The problem with the light shield would be holding Z before your landing lag or endlag ends. Because there aren't extra gimme buffer frames in Melee (in comparison to PM or Brawl), it takes the held Z input as a shield because it never read the pressed Z input (because you were in endlag). Like Sempai and AirFair said, JC grab fixes this problem.

Also, your stick problem might be because you don't have the radii (had to look up the plural for radius) or deadzones set properly. I usually set my deadzones to about 10 (I think that's around where Melee's are) and all radii are supposed to be set to 100.
