I really need some help with elite battles! Please try and give me an answer!

Okay, so my Link got into Elite Battles in smash U, but Elite only allows you to use the characters with a high enough GSP - in this case, my Link. However, Elite takes up the place of the original, non-elite mode. The only way to gain GSP (which is what I need to do) is to play matches. I want to get my Cloud into Elite, so I need to fight, but I can't do that, because I'm in the elite. This is a paradox! A little help, intelligent people?

I think you simply just select your cloud, which should appear as greyed out when you enter elite mode. Once you select cloud, elite mode is disabled until your clouds gsp rises high enough for elite
