i play smash 64 online..
i'm good but, i've never used training mode or got good by playing the CPU..
since there's a wide variety of pro's online and occasionally i play malva(isai) i got good.
i learn from others i don't learn from playing the CPU or training mode.
i've learned all the basics/combo's everything from different people and of course part of my own little tricks on my gameplay :p
BUT since it's online i can play ANYBODY that i want a bunch of good people everyday or something in the comfort of my own room.

anyways, i'm talking about BRAWL.
i pretty much realized that it's the same thing for brawl.
playing those dumb cpu aren't gonna get me better..
or training mode..(well not as much)
and online sucks(and i dont have a wii lan adapter yet)

since playing people in real life isn't like online i would have to get driven places to play.
i'm willing to do that :D

i'm decent.. if you want to play w/ me contact me.

San Diego is an incredibly active area. There is a smashfest going on at Hall's house on wednesday. And we usually have weeklies in Chula Vista. (Though they are on a short hiatus because of Havok's work schedule.) We also travel out of the city for tournaments pretty regularly in carpools.

The majority of San Diego smash activity happens to be in southern San Diego county, just a heads up if you live in like La Jolla or Del Mar or farther. We have regulars who come from as far as Oceanside.

Good links:

http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=148906&page=227 - Thread for Chula Vista Weeklies. Hall posted his address for the smashfest Wednesday.
http://sdsmash.wordpress.com/ - Oats' blog about our smash community. (Contains our power rankings)

And the thread for the very large UCSD Winter Gamefest tournament is stickied.

And yes, offline play is the way to go. :D

Hope that helps. San Diego is probably the nicest community you can start in, haha.

Hm, another San Diego player. How great! :D

Chula Vista is the way to go for Brawl. If you want to play Melee as well, the UCSD Triweeklies are your place.

Hope to see you at some IRL tourneys/smashfests, Dair. :)

(I'm not going to make D-air jokes...it's just too easy.)
