It's Thursday, 7:20 PM where I live. And I was just reading my old Final Fantasy Retrospect that I had up a while back when it suddenly hit me that I played Final Fantasy XIII on Sunday and didn't write about it! So I quickly pulled up the blog entry page and started writing.
Alright, so I was down at Play N Trade (don't know if they have those outside of Arizona), a game store if the name didn't give a big enough hit already. And I walked in, ready to return my broken copy of Okami that I bought there when I noticed that they had the Final Fantasy XIII demo up. "Can I play that?" I asked the guy at the register, "Yeah, but you only get fifteen minuets. It's an hour and half long demo, after all." He handed me a PS3 controller and let me go for.
I skipped the cinematics because 1: I know very little Japanese and 2: It counted toward my fifteen minuets. But I have seen the opening cinematics online, and I'm glad to say that the good old comedy is back. Comedy, something that was absent in ten, eleven and twelve. And I'm happy to see that it's returned in the forum of a black dude who has a Chocobo chick in his Afro. Oh, not the swear fest that was Barret "Mr. T wannabe" Wallace. I'm talking about an awesome Eddie Murphy-style black dude, awesome.
The battle system (which I figured out once one of the guys working there told me what all of the commands do) can kick the *** of all previous Final Fantasies. I don't know how to describe it, really. A cross between Final Fantasy I, XII and Kingdom Hearts? I just can't find the words, but I can say that it's very fast, very action-oriented and it's insanely fun to play.
Final Fantasy XIII is shaping up to be an excellent game, and it might end up even surpassing Final Fantasy IX, but that all depends on how good the story and characters are. But from what I've played, this is going to be a great RPG that should be picked up by anyone who owns a PS3 (and I refuse to acknolage that there's a 360 version).
