Hello, I just got back into Smash after this came out. I recently entered a tourney yesterday on The Break and I would say I did quite awful, I barely won one of my matches and the other matches I had lasted less than two minutes and two stocked easily. I feel like after a few months I have gotten worse in Smash and at times I felt like quitting after seeing my friends improve and myself getting more bad as time progresses. I feel too predictable and no matter how much or what I do, players just somehow know what I will do, heck I am too afraid to even battle anymore. In addition, when they combo me, I cannot break out nor even do a combo at all despite knowing it :(! I feel like my only hope is for some top player or such to understand what I am doing awful at, I do not want to quit playing competitive Smash, but if I cannot improve and keep doing these stupid mistakes without anyone here assisting me, I might have to. In other words, I need some who have the time and patience, and flexibility to help me out. I need to start over from scratch, so can anyone help me out please, I would gladly appreciate it!

Defensive tactics

1. Be wary of air dodging right as you get hit into the air, because you have no momentum and will automatically go straight down and this aids others in hitting combos against you.
2. When on the ground remember you can dodge in place, roll, block, and even jump to get out of sticky situations
3. This is extremely important, grab the edge to recover as it gives you invincibility, and then choose you next move carefully. You can attack, climb back, roll back, jump then even dodge if necessary, or even choose to fall from the edge and regrab it (you will not be re-granted invincibility)
4. Use directional inputs to escape combos (move right and left while in the air, even during your fall animations you can do this.)

Offensive

You will need to master grabbing with your character so you can still attack while your opponent is shielding. In addition find which throw aids you the most for combos or dealing damage, also remember all your attacks and look for an appropiate time to use them (tilt attacks, aerials, smashes, specials, neutrals, maybe even taunt if you main luigi/greninja). Don't forget to mix up your ground/air game to avoid being predictable.

Practice

Fighting becomes easier and you will become more adapt to a character with practice I reccomend online for glory, an ammibo, or training mode for practicing, fight your friends whenever you feel ready.

you main rosalina
you need to raid the rosalina boards and learn everything about her
kinda judging you without knowing, but i dont think youre doing enough effort to be great

other random tips
make sure your tv has no delay at all
being good online doesnt mean youre good in person, there is certain input delay online that doesnt allow you to be 100% precise while playing
playing against cpu doesnt make you much better since its just a timing fight... no mindgames or anything psychological going on... it can just help you practice techniques and improve your timings

Edit: i used rosa as main on the 3ds and is one of my secondaries (dont really have a 100% stablished main right now), i can help you with any questions on rosa

Some places you may want to head to include:
  • Boards for characters you play for advice on playstyle.
  • The Competitive Boards for serious discussion and gameplay advice.
  • NNID & 3DS Friend Code sharing threads to find other players.
Hopefully these pointers will help you out.

Ya, indeed, cpu's do nothing unless practicing combos. You have a WiiU, NNID so I can spar with ya. I need all the support I can get and appreciate your time, thanks! As for TV's, I am in the process of getting a BenQ or an excellent MLG TV.

Don't feel bad, as you wrote you have just gotten back into smash. Smash is a game I learned that you have to play regularly to keep up to date. When I stop playing smash like for a week it happens to me I get quite rusty. Smash at least one hour a day. Save your replays and check what you did wrong. What move could you have done better? Was rolling in that moment necessary? What attack gets you punish the most? Check those. Like fellow smashboards Danny3 said, if you play with good players, air dodging can be one of the most punishable things. Try not to airdodge while landing as it gives a terrible landing lag. Also like Edde, check the thread of your character... Rosalina I assume :3. Last but not least, seek good players . You have to learn from them even if you get frustrated, save the replay, check your mistakes... Don't give up ^.^/

Welp practice is not helping, in fact its making me worse. I do not know why I am getting worse, either its just I suck at smash and should quit, or idk what else. Its like they know what I will do without doing anything, and when I sense their moves, despite blocking or capitalizing, its effortless!
