I need help with a certain technique

How does the Yoshi grab onto the ledge after running in the opposite direction like that? It seems so quick and useful and I'd love to learn how to do that. Also, can this be done with any character?

1. Run off.
2. Fastfall.
3. Hold stick towards ledge.
4. Jump.
5. ???.
6. Profit.
