I need help for setting up a tournament at my school with extreme restraints

By extreme restraints I'm talking about having a tournament for 128 people max over 3 days and 20 to 21 hours at the most. The first two days we're planning on having 64 people battle for each day but only have 8 people battle for a specific hour. That means for each of the first two days, we'll have the tournament set up for 8 hours, and 8 people will play for each hour each day. The reason why we have 8 people play for a specific hour is to work around class schedules since this tournament will be happening from Wednesday to Friday. Then, we’ll take the winners from each hour of each day and move them to Friday where we’ll have them play all day from 1 to 4 PM. The game will be Melee. The matchups will be 1v1 and best 2 out of 3. We want to do four stocks and 8 minute time limits a game, but we may have to lower that to three stocks and 6 minute time limits because of time restraints. We decided to make the tournament single elimination because of time restraints and simplicity. We currently only have 4 TVs at the school and it’s currently unknown if more can be brought and set up. The winner of the tournament will win a PS4.

The biggest problem I have with all this is the single elimination thing. I hate single elimination, and although I know it’s because of time restraints, I still would like to know if it’s possible we could set up double elimination. So, I’ve suggested the solution of preliminaries. These would work the best if we could find a way to do them. This would be the easiest solution since we would give everyone a chance to play whenever they could a week before the tournament starts. The biggest problem with this is that the school doesn’t allow students to set up video games and play them within the school unless a trusted staff member is monitoring the players. The problem is I don’t know if there are any trusted staff members, which I’m not a part of because I’m just a student, who will be willing to monitor the preliminaries. IF we do find someone, and this is a big “IF,” we will be able to weed out all the worthy members of the tournament and place them on the main days where they’ll battle it out on a double elimination bracket.

The activities advisor of the school, who is also the person organizing the tournament, said that prelims is very unlikely, so if you guys have any other suggestions I’d love to hear them. Also, I’d like to ask a few questions about tournaments in general:

1. On average, how long does it take to start a set and rotate from set to set? For example, including hand warmers, how long would it take to rotate from a finished game to a new game, plug in controllers, get the players seated, do hand warmers, go through the banning stages phase, and start the game? Basically how much time do players spend competing against each other that doesn’t include the actual gameplay?
2. Do new, unskilled players usually take longer to finish games than skilled players? I have to take this into account because I’ve really only seen skilled players play Melee, and we did our time calculations based on what I’ve seen in official tournaments. By the way, what I mean by unskilled players is generally not knowing how to finish a game.

That’s all the questions I have for now. If I have any more I’ll ask them later. Also, if any of you guys have any questions about this tournament and how we plan on having it set please ask. I really want to make this tournament fair, but with the huge time restraints I fear we may not be able to make it fair. Again, if you guys have any suggestions please let me know.

The rules have changed. If you would like to see the new rules please go here: http://smashboards.com/threads/need-help-organizing-a-brawl-tournament-at-my-school.341664/

I would like this thread closed or deleted. Thank you.

Usually, if it's something like:

Unskilled vs Unskilled =roughly 4-5 mins

Skilled vs Skilled = 6-7 mins

Unskilled vs Skilled = 2-3 mins

When I went to my first tournament, and played my first match, I lost like, all my stocks in 60 seconds lol

you'll be fine since this isn't brawl and nobody is going to time anyone out

Hehe, uh, about that, I just found out we'll be playing Brawl instead of Melee, so timing out is a possibility. Although, we did make new rules so I'll have to update on that.
First rule, ban sonic and yoshi. Timeouts won't be a problem

We're not banning any characters, just putting a limit. And why only Sonic and Yoshi? I was thinking of Meta Knight or Marth or Pikachu when it comes to timing out.
