Okay i'll start at the beginning of the idiocy that is Project M not working, as always.

I've always had trouble with starting up Project M- sometimes (50-50, i'd say) the Map Creator just sits there and waits for me to create a map and doesn't boot up the game. i did enjoy the game and its' skins and it's creative take on balancing characters out. i wish to continue that. alas ....

the debacle started when i started putting music into it. i have a thing that converts the music to ".brstms" and whatever, i label them appropriately and put them into the correct folder. herein lies the dilemma. the tracks that i replaced, when the game did load up, would simply play really, really sped up versions of the original tracks. it was eerie and not what i wanted. nobody was able to give me a good answer, though i wandered the cosmos in search of a "defragmentation" tool by the bright idea of a user on here and found one, and defragmented the SD card. to no avail, as it only worked and played the correct, replaced music twice out of about 30 or some odd number attempts.

further tampering (i took off skins, mostly- trying not to "overwhelm" Project M, i guess), helped kick-start Project M literally not working. multiple variations of Project M (basically different folders, different skin packs on each, et cetera) fail to function, as Project M refuses to even boot up at this point. whether i defragment the SD card and it's data on it or not, when i boot up Project M, it goes to the "Play/Update" "Welcome to Project M!" boot-up screen, and when i click "Play" it just sends me to the start-up of Brawl again. i've even tried un-modded versions of Project M, no dice. the same result- "Play" and then it loops back into Brawl. will somebody who actually knows what this garbage is please help me.

BRSTMs glitch when the data on the card is fragmented or low on space (plus if there's a lot of file transfers going on). Defragmentation isn't always a clear-cut solution when the issue is really space. An alternate method for defragmenting the card, though, is to drag every file off at the same time, and then back again. This method works for me from time to time.
Also, try booting with gecko instead of the P:M launcher. @ Moydow Moydow usually has the proper steps for setting up gecko, so I'm sure he'll be here in a minute to assist you with re-configuring your card for it.

Also, try not to let wiibrew issues diminish your image of Project M as a whole.

As expected:

  • Install GeckoOS to your SD card (download link, copy the boot.elf from /Gecko1931/HBC/Gecko1931/ to your SD card root)
  • Load GeckoOS via the Stage Builder
  • Go to "Loader Config"
  • Change "Hooktype" to AXNextFrame
  • Save your settings
  • Return to GeckoOS main menu
  • Boot game

BRSTMs tend to mess up when you overwrite them on the SD card. If you change your music, remove the file you're replacing first and then add the new version in. That will prevent the BRSTM from failing more often than not. Find the BRSTMs that don't work, create fresh versions of them and do as I'd recommended with them when adding them onto the SD card.

Did you try, you know, just right-clicking your card..?

....or googling the problem?

Click me to read an in-depth guide on how.

The short and long of it is what everybody else has posted. You got a corrupt (or a lot of corrupt) BRSTM files. That, or you seriously ****ed something up during installation.

No, choose format, because if you've done 'clean' builds on your card over and over again, then the thing is borked up, and the only thing left to do is completely restore the thing. Just back up whatever broken bits of a build you have, format your card, and throw it back on once the format is done.

You so silly, @ standardtoaster standardtoaster

Don't choose format because that will wipe your card. Click properties and then the tools tab. There will be a defeat option (or should be, at least).
defeat option solves everything :p

Windows 8/8.1 doesn't offer a "defragment" option for SD cards; the only option is to use third-party software.
Though sometimes the better option is indeed to just format the card and move everything back onto it after.

Yeah, i have Windows 8 on my laptop and the defragment tool was taken off when they made the shift to 8 (or so says the internet, because i google everything, i'm not good with any of this stuff, i'm quite casual), so i downloaded a third party tool for it. i can format it, yes, and i've nuked the card and i've formatted it multiple times and re-put on files, idk. i'm not good with this sort of files and programming stuff, i'm not technically savvy.

How to solve most of these problems:

Question: Did I change anything from the vanilla build
Answer: Yes
Question: Is it working still?
Answer: Yes, keep on truckin'
Answer: No, undo change, make sure to back up all of my files before I even change anything to begin with.
Question: Did undoing the changes fix it?
Answer: Yes, you fixed the right problem.
Answer: No, you didn't take out all of the changes, or removed too many files. ****'s borked and you should format/start over.

Solution is always restore your previous backup that worked correctly.
"but i have no backups"
"then the vanilla build is your backup"

okay, well, onto the BRSTM problem, because fortunately i had another SD card that wasn't defragmented at all. does anybody have anything else to add on that front ? i've added them one at a time and made multiple "fresh" versions to go over, i've formatted the card and taken vanilla builds for the music folders ... any ideas ?
