Just go through the character list and find ones you like. It's not like if you get good with a character you can't get good with others. Look at Mew2King, he uses everyone in Melee and plans to do the same for Smash 3DS so he can do tutorials.

For instance, I am a Fire Emblem fan, and really like Robin, so he is my main. I also like Megaman and F-Zero, so Megaman and Captain Falcon are two of my backups/secondaries.

My brothers are having the same problem. It only gets harder when you realize that even if you don't particularly like how a character plays you can simply make a customizable version more suited to your playstyle if you're not going pro. Or, just pick ten people and switch out depending on your mood.

Here's my suggestion.

1. Start with Dr. Mario. He's the best character to learn the basics with, as Standard Mario has lost that design goal.
2. After learning and mastering the fundamentals, try to think of what you do most and what you do least when you're Doc.
3. Once you have an idea of that, experiment with characters that emphasize that playstyle. Like: If you rush into battle to do hit-and-runs, try Greninja or Fox. If you just take hits as they come, try Bowser or Ganondorf. If you like to counterattack, try Villager, Kirby, Marth, or Palutena. If you like to camp and set up from afar, try DHD, Villager, Mega Man, or Rosalina. Et cetera, et cetera.

Eventually, there'll be a character you'll come back to more often than the others.

Once you notice that happening, you got your most-likely main.

Well Ike was the strongest in Brawl at one point soo.... People just need to figure Bowser out, then he'll probably fall to upper-mid tier location.

Some people say you should pick a character you like, because you will be more motivated to play and learn if you can like your character. This may very well be the most important thing to simply playing the game.

That being said, to play well, it is important to pick a character who's toolset matches your play style.

Just play on random until you find a character that really suits your style.

Just use Mario.
Then either main him or decide what aspects he lacks.

For example, if he lacks power for your liking, look around and ask the board, or test out characters that are stronger than him. Then figure out what s/he is lacking, say, speed. Then see what characters have high power and speed (E.g Little Mac,) and keep finding faults with the characters until you get to one you like.
