I also was the main streamer for APEX 2012 and 2013. Surprisingly... I have never played Smash before. Well on Friday when Smash Wii-U comes out, I'm going to give the series a chance and try to play! Of course, I'll be streaming my experiences live; so feel free to tune in, give me advice, mock me for being a scrub, etc...

Well I don't have nostalgia for most Nintendo characters. So I never had the impetus to play the series. You have to admit, if the game didn't have Nintendo characters in it, it wouldn't have gotten the chance it has. People wouldn't have found the wonderful fighting game they all love today. If you think about it, there are many other games like Smash which never became anywhere near as popular... because they didn't have a "hook" to get people to try it out.
