I have a slight problem SHLing

Whenever I do the SHL and try to FF, I fall to the ground before I even fire the laser. In other words, I FF too fast...Is there some way to know that your blaster will fire before you reach the ground? If you hear the sound of the blaster does it mean the laser is already out and you can FF?
