What did he mean by this? So many people who came into the scene from the documentary always quote this when hating on him and say he's just using gimmicks

Gimmicks are like weird little tricks that people aren't expecting or haven't seen before. Non-standard. And because people haven't had the chance to fight against those things before, they don't have the time to properly figure them out in a set against someone who's already a good player, and has already figured out Fox/Marth/Falco/whatever MUs. It still is a way to win matches, but it sometimes makes both players feel cheated. Like the loss was dumb or silly, or that the win didn't feel as fulfilling; if that losing player had the time/knowledge to prepare against those gimmicks, results might have been different.

TL;DR gimmicks are tricks

Basically gimmicks are simple tricks and they are usually really easy to beat. But with puff, her bair has insane range and her rest is so powerful. Because of this, the gimmick is hard to beat and people dislike him because they think that puff's gimmicks are easy and she she requires no skill. which implies he is a Fraud

What he was talking about is that he learned one way to play the game. You could put him in a situation and he would respond just about the same way every time. Now, his "gimmick" was pretty good as it allowed him to beat the players ranked below him, but it was easily exploited by the likes of mango for example who used to beat him time and time again. Nowadays he mixes it up and adapts and he's cut out a lot of bad habits that he used to do. However, due to the inability of most new players (and even many older players) to understand this they still get the impression that he is just mindlessly spamming back airs and finding lucky rests/gimps and that ultimately he is carried by puff, a no-skill character.

It's unfortunate that so many people think this way, and in my mind truly a shame that most people just want to watch spacy dittos or captain falcon all the time

Hbox gets insane reads. No denying that. But let's be honest, there are legit reasons to hate puff.

-feels bad to lose against
-a chore to win against
-boring to watch
-doesn't get comboed

Again, huge respect for hbox but it's not like a mystery why people hate puff. Even when you do understand what's going on when puff wins, the fast fallers are still more fun to watch because they can mess each other up equally. Puff gets hit once and you're back in neutral. I would argue that it is not a shame at all that people like watching fox, because this game would be dead without him. Would you feel the same way if the most common matchup was the puff ditto? Of course not! You want to see hbox combo the **** out of the fast fallers!

If you like watching smash 4 then you probably will like watching puff and other floaty matchups. That's great, but me and many other melee players hate smash 4 and don't enjoy watching a long, floaty neutral game. Even if it is intense for the actual players, it is still boring for the audience.

I don't mean that spacies suck and I hate them or that puff is super exhilarating, but there are seriously people who get mad at every character that isn't Fox Falco or Falcon and wish that other characters weren't in the game. On top of that, I would much much much rather watch a decent puff ditto than Chillin vs Milkman because while they move more quickly they drop so much stuff that it's painful to watch

Sometimes i feel like you can play much better than a puff in the match, but still lose because they got a spammed back air or they got a rest.

Could say the same with Fox and back throw shine

Or really any kinda janky set up with any character that doesn't really work unless you are bad/ mess up
