I was around here more during the early days of the 3DS release and got some helpful tips with Bowser long ago, but it feels like I still make the same mistakes somehow. Note: This thread really isn't about my Bowser play, but more of a asking for help kind of thread in general with understanding Smash.

I can understand some of the advanced tech for this game like SDI, SHFF, etc and understand tech for certain characters as well. I think that's always easy for me to pick up in any fighting game. However a problem that I had with most Smash games is that I can't really take it with a serious mindset. When growing up I always played with items all the way through Brawl and Brawl was the first time I was able to do some advanced stuff and fight without items using Solid Snake. I could get a few kills, but I always found it hard getting constant kills since I seemed to always get outpoked for some reason. There are times I can make big comebacks, but most of the time I can't even touch the other person. The same mindset carried over to the 3DS/Wii U version now.

Now that I'm trying to get back into this game with a somewhat serious mindset (switched my main to Ryu now since SF is my main fighting game of choice) I still find myself getting horribly wreckt, even after a week or so of practice. I can adapt a bit during matches, but I always (personally) find a lot more BS that happens here that I can't figure out why it happened, compared to other fighting games what I can tell I actually lost to and what I was doing wrong.

Some examples of stuff that I can't personally explain are people attacking out of shield when I can't, or being able to land safe after a (dodged) normal in the air and being able to attack me but I can't do the reverse, etc. Probably the best thing I've really done as Ryu (compared to Bowser or Snake) was able to set up a projectile trap but that kind of gets outbeat a bit fast once they figure out the timing of my Hadous (I'm a Sagat main so I'm use to zoning with a lot of projectiles). And I'm decently great at Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc.

TLDR I need a lot more help understanding things with Smash compared to other fighting games because I can't take it seriously.

just be calm shut your eyes between matches and dont get nervous
I can stay calm most of the time between matches, thanks to Street Fighter, but just getting the hang of things down and punishing/rushing down seems to be my worst offender.

Smash Bros is very different from a traditional fighting games in plenty of ways. I think it just comes down to learning about this one specifically. Look up basic guides and explanations for mechanics in Smash Bros. For example, the issue you said of punishing people, try looking into stuff like landing lag and how landing while air dodging leaves you much more vulnerable for punishing than if you had just landed and then put up a shield.

There's a lot to take into consideration here, it's a lot more open and on-the-fly than other fighting games. I think that as soon as those basic aspects click into place, then you might be able to enjoy the game as much as you'd like to. Ryu is probably the best choice for you, considering how much you like Street Fighter, but still try and remember that he plays like a Smash character in this game despite carrying over moves and inputs from his own series.

Zoning with Fireballs somewhat works still and I can punish anyone coming in pretty easy, but trying to rushdown on my own is completely wrecking my day. I guess all it really does come down to is mindgames somewhat since doing a SHFF Neutral Aerial always whiffs whenever I hit it on a shield. Speaking about in the air, sometimes I can never even touch the ground. Airdodging seems to only work when it wants to and if they're on the ground it doesn't feel like I can get down on some matches because I can't dodge w/o getting punished because of the landing lag.

A bit half and half. I can play a mean Akuma, Bison, and Balrog to keep pressure on in SF. Dunno about Smash though. I think I'm starting to get the hang of things with how things work in regards to defense in the game. It's still odd sometimes, especially with online, but I'll understand it eventually.
