I have been watching videos from top players of other Smash games and man, why they abuse roll soooo much in this game? Isnt it punishable or what? :/ I need an answer to this because if roll is a much better option now, that makes a huge change in the gameplay style.

Defense is an important element in all Smash Bros. installments. Even in Brawl, you had to do some defensive tactics to stay alive.

Rolls are faster, while air dodges are more punishable.

It's balanced out ground play vs. air play, IMO.

Rolls are still punishable, granted a lot less. It also depends on your character. It just so happens that the characters people are using the most have good rolls. Keep in mind that people tend to roll a lot when they're not sure of what to do, something which is very common in the early stages of a new game.

Additionally, it appears rolls are the superior option to sidesteps in this game due to the general buff to jab combos.

It is a much better option. The reason you see people doing it so much is the game isn't even out everywhere and where it is out it's been a little over a week. It takes time to learn counters to strategies. Rolling will definitely be a key component in high level play but will probably be less than it is now.

I can see your point here.
Similarly I gradually became more aggressive while playing against the few characters in the demo.

It's not that it's necessarily bad play, but like all repeated actions, it becomes predictable, and thereby more easily punished. Use it, don't abuse it.

Also keep in mind this is 3ds play - a lot of people aren't comfortable enough with the controllers to do alternate defensive movements - rolling is effective enough for how easy it is to perform on the 3ds controller.

A lot of people? Do you have a source for that, because I am mostly reading positive impressions about the 3DS controls.

Since there is no wavedashing, the only way to escape or approach is rolling. They are faster, but still punishable. You can see they are predictable, so you can guess where and when your opponent is going to be standing vulnerable for some frames. Enough time for starting a combo and kicking him out.

In the other hand, since there's some restrictions on airdodges and tilts and aerials seem to be changed in some ways, we can say ground and air play are balanced. Some ground characters (:4littlemac::4olimar::4yoshi::4villager:) are viable. And some air characters (:4diddy::4jigglypuff::4ness::4wario2:) are too.

Personally, I'd preffer to see something else, not necessarily wavedashing, but some other advanced technique which can be combined with rolling in order to escape and approach.

I didn't meant anything extreme by it. It just makes sense that people play in a slightly more basic fashion because dash dancing, fox trotting, and aerial spotdodge approaches/retreats take more effort to do on the 3ds controller than a simple and effective roll. With an actual control stick and full-sized triggers, we can play as we did in melee/brawl.

The controls are great, but the controller is a huge difference and will provide some slight changes to how characters move.

Been seeing a lot players like you in twitch chats, even my own, whining about "too much rolling".

Please take some time to understand that the game has changed a bit. Rolling is an effective defensive option, as long as you use it intelligently. There's no shame in using it. It's an option. It even works as a mobility option because of how fast it is, and it covers ground quite quickly.

A lot of the more popular characters right now have very good rolls, or their rolls have additional utility beyond standard movement.

Little Mac relies on his amazing rolls to get him around on the ground and punish over-aggressive foes, as otherwise a grounded target is inherently an easier target than one in the air, and Little Mac does not want to be in the air if he can avoid it. Even if his dash speed is very high and his dash is very low to the ground, that does not change the fact that having one less dimension to move around in makes your movement more predictable. His amazing rolls help mitigate that significantly, which is why they get used so often.

Rosalina uses rolls a lot to keep a separated Luma from moving with her. Luma normally performs the same inputs as Rosalina, so if she dashes normally Luma will dash in the same direction. However, Luma lacks the ability to roll, so rolling is an easy way for Rosalina to manoeuvre without moving Luma as well, as well as a way to desync herself from Luma by having him perform an attack as she rolls. On top of that, her rolls have her go invisible for most of the roll, giving them mindgame potential against an inattentive — or preoccupied — opponent.
